lines 1-4: Eventually one must succumb to the need for sleep despite any efforts to fight against it.
lines 5-8: Sleep forces one to go from being "upright" (standing) to "level" (horizontal). Sleep makes you (relatively) still, or has a "calming" effect on you temporarily.
lines 9-12: It is estimated that through the average person's lifetime, around one third of it is spent in sleep.
