Falling Rocks

Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.

Mr. Smith, his wife, and their two children were taking a trip to the mountains. They were traveling on a bus, and decided to stop for a meal. Mr. Smith pushed the red button, and the bus stopped. They thanked the bus driver, talked about the weather and such, and retrieved their luggage.
The Smith family walked the short distance to the Mac Donald's, and went in. After ordering, they sat down at the table nearest to the television.
The news was on, and they heard the announcer talking about a bus accident that had happened a few minutes ago. There was an avalanche of rocks, and the bus was crushed.
"That was our bus!" exclaimed Mrs. Smith. "Good thing we got off..."
"Good timing I guess...", agreed Mr. Smith.
But their eldest daughter, Jasmine, disagreed. "We never should have gotten off the bus!" Her family looked stricken, until she explained it to them.
"Oh, you're right. We should have eaten at the Wendy's a few miles up..."

Why did Jasmine say this?
