Sound + Sound = SilenceScience brain teasers require understanding of the physical or biological world and the laws that govern it.
In which situation can 2 sounds make silence?
AnswerIt is possible to make 2 sounds which are 'mirror images' of each other.
Sound 1 + Sound 2 = Silence.
If both sounds were viewed on an oscilloscope the waves of sound 1, would be opposite of the waves of sound 2. Sound 2's peaks and troughs appear to 'fill in' the spaces which sound 1's wave does not. This effect is called Anti-Noise. It is how noise canceling headphones work.
