Brain Teasers
Train Spotting
During a recent plane and train spotting contest, five eager entrants were lined up ready to be tested on their spotting ability. They had each spotted a number of planes (26, 86, 123, 174, 250) and a number of trains (5, 42, 45, 98, 105). From the clues below, can you determine what colour shirt each was wearing, their position, their age (21, 23, 31, 36, 40) and the number of trains and planes spotted?
1. Bob spotted 44 less trains than planes.
2. Tom was 36 years old.
3. The person on the far right was 8 years younger than Bob, and spotted 174 planes.
4. Josh was wearing a yellow shirt and spotted 37 trains fewer than Bob.
5. The person who was wearing a green shirt, was 19 years younger than the person to his left.
6. Steven spotted 105 trains and 250 planes.
7. The person in the centre was 31 years old, was wearing a blue shirt and spotted 42 trains.
8. Doug, who was on the far left, spotted 26 planes, and spotted 72 trains more than planes.
9. The person who was wearing a red shirt was 4 years older than Tom and was not next to the person wearing a blue shirt.
10.The person who was next to the 31 year old, but not next to the person who spotted 26 planes, was wearing a orange shirt, and spotted 45 trains.
1. Bob spotted 44 less trains than planes.
2. Tom was 36 years old.
3. The person on the far right was 8 years younger than Bob, and spotted 174 planes.
4. Josh was wearing a yellow shirt and spotted 37 trains fewer than Bob.

like I said before really tough but good. your expaning my cranial capacity.
I enjoyed this puzzle, but I have a couple of questions: Why are the people named in the answer not those from the puzzle? Why does Josh have 250 planes and 150 trains when clue #4 says otherwise?
This would be a fun puzzle if the names matched, and conflicting information (i.e. about Josh) wasn't there.
You can buy whole books full of these types of puzzles and this one is poorly done. Wrong names, commas missing in the answer and answers given that don't fit the clues. Editors?

This would have been much better if you had listed all the information to choose from. i.e. The names of the people and the color of shirts to choose from.
A few mistakes in the info of this teaser. First: In the answer there was a guy named Alan who wasn't mentiond anywhere. Second: Some of the clues couldn't be true because theY conflicted with the others. Example: It said in # 1 that Josh spotted 37 trains fewer than Bob. Then in # 6 it said he had 105 trains, which is the highest number of trains so he can't have fewer than anyone. The answer to this teaser should really be "NO", because in the beginning it asked,"From the clues below, can you determine what color shirt each was wearing, their position, their age, and the number of tains and planes they spotted?"
Wrong question!!!. At one stage it is clearly mentioned that Josh watched X planes and Y trains but later it conflicts with other hints/options.

I agree, the correct answer should be "No". It is next to impossible to solve this one when not even the names match.
Point no 4 and 6 in this puzzle are contradictory. In point 4 it says josh spotted 37 fewer trains than bob. while in point 6 it says that josh spotted 105 trains which is the max no of train spotted by person. then how come josh spotted 37 fewer trains than bob?
I solved this one successfully, except for the names, obviously. The ones in the solution didn't match those in the problem. It works out just fine if you assume that two of the participants are named "Josh".
Heres the deal. I did some work on this sketchy puzzle, and I got a logical outcome. For me everything was in the right order, except the names, because the creator was mixed up. To help out I will post a new answer.
From left to right
name, planes, trains, age, color
Doug, 26, 98, 40, Red
Josh, 250, 105, 21, Green
Bob, 86, 42, 31, Blue
Tom, 123, 45, 36, Orange
Josh, 174, 5, 23, Yellow
I've done one like this before and the fact that there is 2 Josh's makes it better. After all it is a brain teaser.

Great Teaser!
its an okay teaser. a few redundancies but still okay. a list would be nice also. overall, not bad.
to many clues. you can skip nr. 10 completely and as hint nr. 9 it is enough to tell: red shirt ist 4 years older than Tom.
but still i like it
