surely, phonetically speaking, AQU and ACQ would be pronounced the same. The teasers asks for a PHONETIC reason, but the answer gives a SPELLING reason.

I hear you on that. However, if you were able to pick up on the similarity of the words and couples, you would likely spell them out, or (if your brain doesn't feel like it) you might settle. If you went the extra mile though, you would probably be happy with your accomplishment.

OH MAN!!!!

I didn't even realize the hint there. That makes the issue near invalid. I actually (or you guys) TOLD YOU to write it out!

Goodness... how could I get this one if I pronounce WHITTLE as WHITTel. LOL.

How about with a Whittle help?

I would have thought that phonetically number 4 did not belong as it contains 3 syllables whereas the others contain 2. I can see no way of coming up with an "AQU" or ACQ" sound and there was no hint that anything had to be added.

Phonetically, the answer should be #3. It does not belong as 'akwhittel' is not a word. 'Akwittel' is. The given answer depends on spelling, not pronunciation. I chose #3 because it is the only one with the WH sound. Fun, nevertheless.
