Brain Teasers
To Fly or Not
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Duffus decided he would start raising chickens again. He didn't want to do all the work, so he hired Mr. Redneck's son to clean the cages. "Just make sure you close the cage behind you when you go in," Duffus told Jr. Redneck. Things went well for a week or two until Duffus and Mr. Redneck found Jr. R frantically chasing the chickens around the yard. "Oh no, you left the gate open!" cried Duffus. "No I didn't! They must have all flown out that hole," exclaimed Jr. Redneck, pointing to a large hole in the cage wire about 2 meters up. "Oh, sorry. Ok, then let's round 'em up," Duffus muttered, as he chased after some hens. "No, it's not ok," said Mr. R, grabbing his son by the scruff of the neck. "Don't you dare lie to us, boy, everyone knows chickens can't fly!" "Now, wait a minute, I believe him!" Duffus interrupted, just in time to save young Redneck's neck.
Why did Duffus believe him even though he knew that chickens can't fly?

Answer
Duffus explained to Mr. R., "While in England once, I read on the back of a Crazy Fruit drink bottle that chickens can sometimes flap hard enough to get enough lift to clear a 3 meter fence. So though unlikely, it is possible that they could somewhat fly a short distance."Hide Answer Show Answer

Either they can fly or they can't fly! Which is it?
My understanding is that they can fly, but for only very short distances before their general ungainliness brings them back to the ground.
Like the teaser says, they can fly in very short bursts. They're too heavy to get any real height or distance, but with a lot of flapping they can stay up for a couple of seconds.
No they cannot fly, but they have short burst of flying in which they can get that high. Thats how they sleep, they roost about 6 feet up.
Shouldn't this be under 'trivia'? Or have I gone mad? Either way, nice teaser, I thought it was that he accidently got birds or something like that.
I thought the answer would be more 'thorough' than that, but it was still fun. Can't they glide?
i'm having trouble with the final question and the answer - they seem to contradict each other: why did duffus believe him even though he knows chickens can't fly (a) because he knows chickens can fly...
that bit might need to come out or be changed
i thought there was a ramp that led up to the hole

I thought the chicken could just "climb" up the chicken wire......
Then again, I've never seen a chicken coordinated enough to climb
I liked this though

I don't gt it...
I don't get it!...
Some breeds of chickens are better fliers than others. Chickens can't fly in the truest sense of the word - they can't gain altitude or glide - but they can flap hard enough to get out of a hole in the coop.
