The Power of Money
What is wrong with the following calculations?
£1 = 100 pence so:
100p = 10p * 10p so:
£1 = 10p * 10p so:
£1 = £1/10 * £1/10 so:
£1 = £1/100 so:
£1 = 1p
£1 = 100 pence so:
100p = 10p * 10p so:
£1 = 10p * 10p so:
£1 = £1/10 * £1/10 so:
£1 = £1/100 so:
£1 = 1p
Answer
The mistake is in saying 100p = 10p * 10p. 10p times 10p would be 100 p^2, so all of the following assumptions are also wrong.The second line should read: 100p = 10 * 10p.
Correctly written, the calculations would read:
£1 = 100 pence so:
100p = 10 * 10p so:
£1 = 10 * 10p so:
£1 = 10 * £1/10 so:
£1 = £1

Good puzzle. In algebra, 10p*10P = 100p^2 but since the "p" represents pence there is no such thing as "pence squared". In other words it has an abstract meaning but cannot be interpreted as a physical quantity.
this is FANTASTIC smithy!
thanks )
this should be in math
yea i agree..it should have been placed in the math type.
well its a math trick, so math or trick is ok, but i decided to put it in trick
Even though i am a math genius but u really tricked me
Math, not trick
Did you accdiently put it under trick?
i decided that since the p represented pence, the problem went wrong when it was decided that 1pound/10 x 1pound/10 = 1pound/100 when in reality (since 1pound = 100 pence) it should have read 10,000pence/100
but now my brain hurts!
but now my brain hurts!
ahh too many numbers and symbols!!
? ?
£1 does NOT = 1p. I use that kind of money . Great one though.
How is that a trick teaser?
That should have been in Math.
