Awesome! Got it immediately - very clever!
May 10, 2008

Good one, haven't bowled in over 35 years so it didn't come to me right away.
May 10, 2008

took me a few seconds, but the 'ten white' bit finally gave me the answer. good riddle!

Bowing balls can be any color, not just black. Having said that, I admit I wasn't even close in solving this one. Nice teaser. Thanks for posting.

Great Teaser!
May 10, 2008

I was at a bowling banquet this week, so the answer came before I finished reading the whole riddle. Easy, but cute.
May 10, 2008

I thought of a different but workable answer: Someone was playing "black" in the board game, Othello. A single black disk was placed to line up with two others (three total "eyes") to flip over a total of ten white disks ("soldiers"). What do you think?
May 10, 2008

I didn't figure it out, but it is a very good teaser!

Just took a few minutes to figure it out, but I had it in no time. Good teaser.
May 10, 2014

simple, yet fun
May 10, 2014

Though I got it, I agree that bowling balls do not have to be black and that could be a bit misleading.
I liked the idea of Othello as an answer too!
May 10, 2014

I don't think the poem is implying that the ball is black, because it says there are THREE eyes. The "eyes" must be the holes of the ball, which due to shadows within, will usually appear black. However, I don't see how the holes of a bowling ball play a part in knocking down the pins.
May 10, 2017

The "three eyes" (the finger holes) are instrumental in getting the bowling ball down the lane, since the bowler uses them to deliver the ball. Of course, the holes can't be given all the credit for the strike, but I guess that's poetic license to describe it this way.

Very cool riddle! The ten soldiers in white definitely conjured up bowling pins so it was really the giveaway. Then again, it also made me think of teeth... As for the black as night three eyes, that's not stating the bowling ball must be black, but instead that the holes are black. Because they're holes. Get it?

Elegant in its simplicity. Concise. A true riddle. Very nicely done.
