Hidden Time & Again III
Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.
Inside each set of the following words, there is a pair of smaller words. By putting & between them, lo & behold, you'll make a familiar phrase. For example, "Thighbone/Swallowtail" conceals "High & Low."
1. Firecracker/Misconstruing
2. Blockbuster/Doohickey
3. Shunting/Bespeckled
4. Proliferation/Climbable
5. Heartstrings/Consciences
Answer
1. Rack & Ruin
2. Lock & Key
3. Hunt & Peck
4. Life & Limb
5. Arts & Sciences

| @ germangemini, it refers to a method of typing where you literally have to 'hunt' for where the letters are and then 'peck' with only one or two fingers. Glad you guys liked it though. |

| Got all but the first one. Maybe my grandpa would have used that phrase - before they invented the supermarket. Sounds like what you hunted went bad on the rack. |
tazng00se
Jul 28, 2005
| laura0489...it just means if something or someone goes to rack and ruin, they are utterly destroyed or wrecked. |

| This was fun. I got 4 out of 5. I just didn't get the first one. I had fun with it! |
FulanitoGM
Aug 29, 2005
| That first one gave me a little trouble, too. I wrote down 3 possibilites for it, and it ended being the first one I wrote down, even though, like everyone else, I didn't know what it meant. But, hey, I'm 3 for 3 on the "Hidden Time & Again" series! WHO DA MAN?!?! Way to go, Fishmed! |
schatzy228
Mar 04, 2006
| Hidden in each there "is" a pair.
I was surprised to catch that in one of your teasers.
It was a good one though. |

| I'M WITH SCORPIO, THESE ARE NOT MY CUP OF TEA (HA HA COMING FROM CHINA) AND TOO TOO EASY. GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN SINK MY TEETH INTO BESIDES EVERBODY'S HIDE. |
GebbieRose
Jul 29, 2006
| Hey, lmurray, do all teasers have to be something you can "sink your teeth into"? I like a challenge, too, but give credit where it's due, please - this one was fun, if easy. Keep up the good work, Mr. Fish! |
GebbieRose
Jul 29, 2006
| Besides, I see you have yet to go out on a limb & submit a teaser. Ok, then? |
OldChinaHand
Jul 29, 2006
| Good on you Gebbie Rose, but Imurray just does a Georgie Porgie and runs away.
Teasers like these are most useful for learning expressions and word play, great for teaching and skill building. Thank Fishmed. |
bluehawk
Jul 29, 2006
| Okay,
1. I got RACK(didn't get RUIN).
2. Got LOCK, KEY.
3.Got HUNT, PECK.

Jul 29, 2006
| I'm with the "struggled with number one" club... So I cheated and came up with two possibles before looking at the answer! I got "rack & ruin" and "fire & ruin"... Eliminated "crack & con" as a possible because this is a family oriented site! I'm calling it a win (lol)... Helps keep my streak alive. Also learned a new phrase that's apparently been around for about a zillion years! Geat fun. Keep 'em coming! |

Jul 29, 2006
| The singular form for no. 5 has a better alliterative sound, and dispenses with the sibilation of the plural |
jabdr
Jul 29, 2006
| This sort of teaser is easy for me (unlike rebus and science & others). And who doesn't feel brilliant doing something easily? Great fun, thanks Fish. |
bradon182001
Jul 29, 2006
| I like this kind of teaser. Didn't get #1, but the rest were easy after some thought. Fun teaser. |

Jul 29, 2006
| A little too easy, today. But they are still enjoyable. Keep it up, Fish. As long as others can enjoy these type of puzzles, keep them coming. |

Jul 29, 2006
| I once visited Tara, but 'rack & ruin' never occurred to me. I got the rest, though. |

| I too have fallen victim to #1. And I'm glad I didn't keep looking, as I've also never heard of "rack & ruin".
I also didn't get #5, oops? I wrote down "Heart & Science?" on my note paper... I did do a google search on the term, and it did come up about 13,500 times, so I stopped trying to look harder. Like I said, "oops." |
Stuff1
Jul 29, 2006
| What's rack and ruin? Still like this teasers! |
rhmaustin
Jul 29, 2006
| "Rack" is a variant spelling of "wrack" which first appeared in Old English in the 14th century and is derived ultimately from a word meaning "something washed up by the sea." It came to refer to any sort of "wreck," then more broadly to any kind of ruin or destruction. The alternate spelling "rack" is first attested in 1599. So "rack and ruin" means "destruction and ruin." |

Jul 29, 2006
| Got them all except number three, I haven't ever heard the term hunt and peck so I guessed hunt and led. I like these teasers - probably because I can do them - unlike most of the other teasers |

| I love this kind of teaser. However, wrack as used in "wrack & ruin" really does need that "w". |
speedqueenkmw
Jul 29, 2006
| Love, love, love these...probably cuz they're easy for me. It's a boost to the ego to find at least ONE type of teaser I can regularly solve. So, for my ego, keep 'em comin'. |
patm
Jul 29, 2006
| These teasers are so much fun! It's true about wrack & ruin, but the idea was a good one. If one is familiar with American figures of speech, they are easy. Let's have more! |

Jul 29, 2006
| Fishmed, neat job, didn't do too badly. Of course I didn't get them all, but practice helps. More please? |
c_rae
Jul 29, 2006
| Another good one! Like many beofre me, I got all but #1 (I haven't heard the phrase before either!).
On a side note: Just because you can't solve the teaser or it's not your favorite style , doesn't give you the right to call it "stupid" or make other negative remarks about it. If you don't like it, write your own! |

| By the way, just to be Mr. Smarty-pants for the day, I'm surprised that so many of you haven't heard of rack and ruin. I mean, (here he goes!), doesn't anyone READ books anymore? And, how about fairy tales? Doesn't anyone read fairytales anymore? Even in old CARTOONS, you will find that phrase!
OK, enough already, Mr. Smanty-parts!

| 5/5, yay! I'm surprised so many never heard of "rack & ruin" (same destination as "hell in a handbasket") and "hunt & peck". Maybe everyone knows how to type these days, so no one hunts and pecks anymore. |
