Brain Teasers
30°F = Freeeeeeeez
If I were in Hawaii and dropped a bowling ball in a bucket of water which is 45 degrees F, and dropped another ball of the same weight, mass, and size in a bucket at 30 degrees F, both of them at the same time, which ball would hit the bottom of the bucket first?
Same question, but the location is in Canada.
Same question, but the location is in Canada.
Hint
Tricky title!Answer
Both questions, same answer: the ball in the bucket of 45-degree F water hits the bottom of the bucket last.Did you think that the water in the 30-degree F bucket is frozen? Think again. The question said nothing about that bucket having anything in it. Therefore, there is no water (or ice) to slow the ball down...

Two tricks for the price of one - clever
That was a good one. it had me going
You said that the question said nothing about water ....but it does...I'm confused
I never said that there was water in the buckets; They were just two normal water buckets.
You said drop the ball in a "bucket OF water" which means that the bucket contains water. You never said bucket that is used to hold water. Its like saying moneybags...that doesn't mean that there is money in them, it just means that they are used to hold money. But if you say "bag OF money" it means they have money in them???
No!!
A bucket of water dpoes not mean that is really has to have water in it!!
It is a way to spacify the object.

Wow even though Freeeeez but i was realy hot when reading your teaser.Nice work!!
Look up the word "of" in the dictonary and you will find this. Number 6: Composed or made from; A dress of silk :: A Bucket of water....And Number 9: Belonging or connected to; the rungs of a ladder :: A Bucket of Water....you see "of" decribes what something is made up "of" or what is in it....

I ran out of room with the dictonary thing but anyway the point is...you said a bucket of water is a way to decribe something and you're exactly right...its a way to describe a bucket that contains water...if you want to describe a bucket without water...you would just say bucket...........
Which is exactly what the teaser says - one "bucket of water which is 45 degrees F" and one "bucket at 30 degrees F". No water is mentionned in relation to the second bucket - it's empty.
I understand about the difference in the buckets. One has water, one doesn't. Why would the answer be the bucket with the 45 degree water? Someone please explain.
The question asks in which bucket would the ball hit bottom FIRST, but the answer says it would hit bottom LAST in the bucket of water (because the water resistance slows the ball down). Perhaps that's why you're confused, bitocreamsaver?
Thanks Gizzer for explaining!
I owe you one
I owe you one
that was pretty good
Thanx Trojan
Good one. It didn't even pass my mind that their would be ice or water in it though, so i didn't get tricked.
Oops, then you tricked me
why copy teasers out of a book? rashad clearly did not understand this riddle. despite that glaring fault, this is the best teaser so far.
a good teaser had me stumped before i looked at the anser but over all a good teaser
nice nice
Omega, one would be able to conclude that, according to the common saying, "Mean people suck," and how your last message would be considered by some, if not most, if not all, to be mean, you suck.
No hard feelings.

good 1
To eelliot2: He meant that the second mucket had no water in it. I'm surprised I got it right. It shouldn't have had such a high difficulty rating.
well then how can a bucket be at 30 degrees, unless it was 30 degress in Hawii. Nope.
It doesn't matter where the buckets are located, they said that to throw you off, because of the difference in temperatures. He clearly states that one bucket has water in it, and the other one is empty, the empty bucket is easier for the bowling ball to reach the bottom, not that complicated peaople. But I have to admit, it had me stumped for a little while. Great One I Must Say!!!!!
Thanx everyone, i appreciate your comments (good or bad ).At the end everyone has his own opinion
liked it!! was easy though

Ok Im sorry to be rude and prove you wrong.....
BUT
Temperature has NOTHING to do with how fast the balls fall. The rate of a gravitational pull on ANY object is the same for everything.
Dont believe me? Drop two objects of obviously different sizes and look which one hits first.
Sorry.....I didn't find this one entertaining.

That was kind of bad, and the hint didn't help me at all!
I can't believe that one went right by me. I started thinking about the degrees indicated and the title "Freeeeeeez" and got off on the wrong road which lead to ice and water. Didn't catch the water in bucket and just bucket. Very good one - you got me on this one. Gee, right about now I think I need to put one of those buckets over my head - preferably the one without water....
Thanks
Hahahahaha, thats one of my favorites so far
i spent the whole time trying to work out how you were simultaneously dropping balls in buckets that had two different temperatures.
it didn't help that i spent a lot of time trying to work out how warm/cold 45 and 30 degrees farenheit is (i come from a country that uses celcius)
good teaser!

Yeah, I, too, come from a country which uses celcius... But I guess that wasn't the point! Good one!
Just because you didn't say there was water doesn't mean that is the fact.
semantics takes away all the fun
In certain places of Canada, that 45 degree ferinheit bucket wouldn't stay that hot for long... Especially when I wrote this, it's -37 degrees centigrade outside...
This is the first riddle that had Canada in it... do you live here? I do.

LOL. i didnt even think that the water might be frozen
NICE ONE
next to this my teasers PALE in comparison

niec i new the 45 degree woult hit but u said there was no water or ice so the same very clever a+!
very clever i would think that the 30 degree bucket would crack since it was frozen and the bottom would be covered but there is no way to tell is there?
but you said the 45 degree water filled bucket won. the 30 degree bucket should have won. you were wrong
It's kinda hard to figure out which is more confusing the teaser or some of these comments.
Brilliant!
To all the sarcastic comments from people who think they're smart - make sure YOU understand the teaser before being critical...
The teaser & answer are 100% correct. Temperature has nothing to do with it - a ball will fall faster through air (in an empty bucket) than water (in a water filled bucket)!!!

like na double teaser ;b
I still don't get it!
i'm sorry but in hawaii its very humid and the cold bucket would condense water drops from the air making a layer of ice on the bottom that the ball would have to crack to get through even though its a bowling ball the other would get to the bottom first
Awesome. This is probably the best teaser on this site I have yet to see. Seriously. Clever!
What?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Nice! you got me.
Excellent teaser! Makes you think you found the trick, but there's another one.
You didn't say anything about the thirty-degree bucket NOT having ice...
