this makes absolutely no sense. According to the riddle as stated, the cloaks's worth is never discussed.
can someone please explain how
ok, i finally figured out how:
12 months wage = 100 + c (where c stands for cloak)
Then 7 months wage is equal to
7 * (100 + c)/12
This has been given as equal to c + 20.
So, 7 * (100 + c)/12 = c + 20
solving this equation for c gives the cost of cloak as $92.

This is similar to another teaser on here; I prefer another way of solving it...
The last 5 months are worth $80 (difference between 12 months pay and 7 months pay), which is $16 per month. Therefore, the first 7 months are worth 7*16=$112. For this he was given the cloak and $20, so the cloak is worth $92. I find this much simpler than the algebra

I did it the same as leftclick. Algebra is soooo overused in the solutions on Braingle when a little common sense gives a much easier way to solve the problem. What are they teaching in school these days?
I second lefty! I third Java!!
