Van Gogh's Relatives
Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.
David Van Gogh (pronounced "Go") had many relatives. Can you guess by the clues who they are?
Example: His dizzy Aunt?
Answer: Verti-Gogh
How many other relatives can you guess?
A fruit loving cousin?
The Grandfather from Yugoslavia?
The cousin from Illinois?
His Mexican cousin?
His Great Grandfather who drove a stage coach?
The ballroom dancing aunt?
The bird lover Uncle?
A sister who loved disco?
And his niece who travels the country in a van?
Answer
A fruit loving cousin: Man-Gogh
The grandfather from Yugoslavia: U-Gogh
The cousin from Illinois: Chica-Gogh
His Mexican cousin: Amee-Gogh
His Great Grandfather who drove a stage coach: Wellsfar-Gogh
The ballroom dancing aunt: Tan-Gogh
The bird lover uncle: Flamin-Gogh
A sister who loved disco: Go-Gogh
And his niece who travels the country in a van: Winnie Bay-Gogh

| I think a Winnebago is considered more of a motor home or RV not a van. Other than that, great teaser. |

By the way there are two Mexican members of the Gough family. The one you know AMIGOugh who is very "friend"ly and his cousin GRINGOugh who tends to berate us Norte Americanos. |

Nov 13, 2005
| Yes! This was very, very fun! I got them all , at least I thought of all the answers, but although I thought of wells fargo, I didn't associate that with a stage coach. The van driving relative should obviously be van-go ! What answer is better than that? Oh, did it occur to anyone that technically, all the names whould be , for ex., verti-van-gough, which ruins the whole thing. I thought of many, many more, but they had slightly different kinds of hints, like a cousin who lives a very long way from him, Far-Gough; An Aunt who doesn't like to be held: Leg-Gough (let go, get it? Ha ha ha ha...). Oh boy, sometimes I just kill myself... Thnaks, this was the most fun!

| You Gogh, Gander. Nice job, I love a little flakey corn for breakfast.
A Winnebago may nOOt be a van, but it makes a lot more sense than 'cargo'. Very funny, BatBrain, except that Mexicans are North Americans, and not gringos.
Your teaser reminds me of the time that my neice from California, Sandy A. Gogh, lost her dog, Ding Gogh. Her African friend, Kong Gogh, told her that long A. Gogh she should have lost her E. Gogh and ask her Hawaiian cousin, Archie Pela Gogh, to dance with Fan Dang Gogh. She jumped straight up in the air, though, when Poh Gogh found Ding Gogh and Bing Gogh returned him to Sandy A. Gogh. |

WHY SO MANY RE-RUNS? |

| A very magnificently fun teaser. There is a wide group of people, who will be thoroughly entertained with solving a puzzle like this, every day! Why!?? Because it can be entertaining, and it will get their own minds in gear, for the long day ahead. Keep bringing something like this teaser out on Braingle!! People will enjoy it, both young and old, wealthy or poor, male or female, and any race, cred, color or nationality, smart or dumb, fast or slow... etc |

| Great but the tango is actually not a ballroom dance. The tango is a Latin-American dance...ballroom is like the foxtrot, waltz etc etc
But well done |

| Um, ilovebrocolli, I hate to rain on your little smarty pants parade, lol, but Tango IS INDEED a ballroom dance. If you watch any ballroom competition on TV, or take ballroom dancing lessons, you will see the Tango.
You are correct that the Tango started in South America, Argentina actually. You are also correct that it did not start as a typical ballroom dance. It started as a dance done on the streets, by gangsters, and the men used to do it with each other, not male/female, believe it or not.
But it moved from there and the streets, to the ballrooms in Paris, and then to England. The Tango they do in competitions is called "English Tango", and, it's absurd and ridiculous. The dancers look like, I don't even know, parrots, or some kind of bird. They keep their bodies very stiff, and jerk their heads from looking right to left, for what reason, who knows? It doesn't even LOOK like the Tango that we all know and love, but it evolved from that.
Once again, I'm sorry to burst your balloon, but I hate it when someone tries to burst someone else's bubble and they're wrong. |
shawneeo

| Double post, double post!
Sorry, but I have to ask: Didn't anyone else notice that if the guys LAST name is "VAN GOGH", that all these are really wrong, because it would be "Verti Van Gogh", "Winnie Bay Van Gogh", and so on? lol! |

| Yeah I'm with bradon on this one... maybe I'm just not in a cheesy-funny mood this morning. I think I gave up after getting Man-gogh, because I really thought that answer couldn't really be someone's name, and if the rest were like that... well.... I just didn't want to know. But I read through the clues anyways, couldn't help but ponder "hugh-gogh" and "go-gogh" and "van-gogh" (which was wrong, thank goodness).
And then I looked at the answers... oh dear! I want to meet this Uncle Flamin. Seriously.
Anyways, I had fun reading the comments at least. Good conversation starter, this is! |

"Your teaser reminds me of the time that my neice from California, Sandy A. Gogh, lost her dog, Ding Gogh. Her African friend, Kong Gogh, told her that long A. Gogh she should have lost her E. | I agree with auntisis in that a repeat is not a repeat for everyone. Even though I've been on the site for 3 years, I don't sit at the computer every single day; therefore, most teasers are new to me, welcome, and enjoyable. (And if you recognize a teaser, PASS IT BY!!) Either seek out another one, or, G-d willing, tomorrow's another day!! |

| I'm new to the site, so it was all new to me. I enjoyed the comments, and didn't feel so bad that I oly got two right. However I did feel some of my answers were not so far off. For Mexican relative I had Mexi- gogh or Tac-gohg. For bird loving cousin how about Jun-gohg. |

His Mexican cousin? DIE-Gogh
His Great Grandfather who drove a stage coach? GIDDYUP'N'-Gogh
