Return of the Great Snack Game
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.
Duffus's Snack game had become legendary at his home social events. Now even the adults wanted in on it. Duffus told everyone that if they could figure out his riddle they would get snacks, but if not they got none. As everyone gathered in the living room Duffus set out the rules. I will give you two lists of items. Then I will give you two items and you must tell me which list they belong to and why. Both items may go in the same list so think carefully.
List 1. Brass lamp; Gold watch; Silver spoon.
List 2. Stainless steel chisel; carbide saw blade; cobalt drill bit.
Items
A) Copper pipe B) Lead pipe
Now, many hastily answered thinking the items in list 1) were all related to precious metals, household things, or color; while others assumed the items in list 2) had to do with tools or wood working. But Duffus just kept shaking his head as he devoured bag after bag of chips. His guests grew more & more frustrated with every failed guess and started plotting their revenge (but that's another teaser). Fortunately Duffus's wife stepped up to save the day with the correct answer before Duffus had eaten all the snacks himself.
So which item(s) goes in which group and why?
HintBoth may go in one group.

Answer
All the items in "list 1" are made of non-ferrous metals (metals that don't contain iron). All the items in "list 2" are made with ferrous metals (metals that contain iron). So both items belong in "list 1" as lead & copper are non-ferrous metals.

| Alternate solution;
Items in list 1 are made up of 2 words.
Items in list 2 are made up of 3 words.
The items to place are both made up of 2 words so the belong in list 1

Nice teaser but i must agree with jimbo not every one knows about ferrous and non ferrous or whatever you said but any way i thought maybe they had their own list since they can be in the same list and they were both pipes

ferrous means magnetic, not necessarily containing iron - which cobalt doesn't.

I believe the word is "ferreous", not "ferrous". Also, I agree with evil Daria above. Cobalt is a chemical compound element found in iron, nickel and copper ores. Therefore, cobalt may be present in iron ore, but the converse is not true.

i wouldve said elements in group one vs non elements in group 2, but i guess brass isnt an element, but a compund?

Brass is an alloy. It's a mixture of copper and zinc. They're just mixed together, not bonded, so technically it's not a compound.

ferrous means attracted to magnetic fields b/c colbolt is ferrous and is an element and so is iron so iron can't be in colbolt!!!!
