Brain Teasers
Case of a Murdered Wife
Detective Palumbo had just finished examining the body of Debbie Layne, which was lying on the couch in her plush living room.
"Mrs. Layne was hit on the back of her head 3 or 4 times with the butt of that pistol," the sleuth said.
The .45 lay on the floor near the body. Sheriff Hobbs was dusting the weapon for fingerprints.
"I've telephoned her husband at his office and only told him to come home. I dislike breaking bad news. Will you do it?" the sheriff said.
"I'll do it," said Palumbo as he watched the body being removed from the scene. Then he took a seat in a lounge chair to wait for Mr. Layne.
The ambulance drove away just as Mr. Layne arrived. He came into the living room and asked, "Where's Debbie? What's happened?"
"I'm sorry to have to tell you that she was murdered about 3 hours ago," said Palumbo. "Your cleaning lady found the body and called the sheriff."
"I can't find any fingerprints on this gun," said the sheriff. "I'll send it to the lab."
Mr. Layne's face flushed as he got angry and said, "Please find the fiend that clubbed Debbie to death. I'll put up a twenty-five thousand dollar reward!"
"Save your money," said Hobbs. "The murderer won't be that hard to find."
Why?

Answer
Palumbo knew that the sheriff had only told Mr. Layne to come home and not what had happened. When Mr. Layne saw the gun, he said that she had been clubbed to death. A normal reaction would have been to assume that she had been shot with a gun, not clubbed.Hide Answer Show Answer

I guess my 20+ years of legal work is still imprinted in my brain (or maybe Monk's influence!) but I caught the answer as soon as her loving hubby said "clubbed". Easy but fun. You set up a good case scenario.
That was cool
But really ez.
I'm glad I got it b4 I checked the answer to make sure.

It's nice to have a breather, well written. Sometimes ones in this style make it really obvious what the answer is.
It was a hard one. I didn't get it a first. I 'm a newbie so hope we can talk sometime.
This was a really easy one but good. Most people miss the clues in it, the subtle words or obvious ones. good deal
Great and instantaneosly easy!
But... if having a gun, why don't just shoot?

I agree with everyone else...fairly easy, but definitely fun. Also enjoyed the fact that it was well written.
that was a good1 b/c i actually figured it out on my own
It was very easy so i like it pretty much.
typical....too easy..enough of the teasers in which the guilty party makes a statement that only the person that did it would know.
if he shot her, then the detective wouldn't have an easy case.

Though i didn't get it i still loved that one! At first i thought it woz the cleaner cause nobody could get the finger prints from the gun and the cleaner must be an expert at cleaning, but then i got that it was her husband. One of my best brain teasers ever!
I did get it, these are sort of obvious, but there was no blood...
