Motherly Love
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
Black as night I can be,
Until my Mother sits on me;
Then clear as ice I become
In the rough, thank you Mum.
What am I?
Answer
Coal
When buried deep in Mother Earth, the high pressure transforms black coal into clear diamonds; a diamond in the rough.

| Very fun. Not so easy. I guessed "diamond" from the last two lines. Coal, I believe, is only equated with the first two lines. My answer is "diamond". |

| Coal does not form diamonds. Coal is sedimentary rock made from plant remains. Both diamonds and coal are composed of carbon, and you may be able to process and use coal to artificially create diamonds, but it is not a naturally occuring process. |

| Interesting. I assumed diamond because of the "in the rough" but found it difficult to think of mother earth "sitting" on a lump of coal. Thanks for posting. |

| i thought it was mother nature and water bcuz "black as night i can be" as in an ocean during a storm, and "then clear as ice i can become" referred to becoming ice. great teaser, tho. |

| I did not care at all for it. Just because we do not care for some teasers, does not make our comments stupid as on person said. no one has to like the same thing. |

| The best answers are diamond or carbon.
Diamonds are not formed from coal. They are usually much older and formed much deeper below the Earth's surface than coal. |
