Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
Baby I am and baby I'll be.
Check tub and toss,
so it won't be me.
What cautionary admonition is expressed by the riddle (it's a common phrase)?
HintIt involves a baby and a tub. So what's probably been happening? Then, what's going to happen next?

Answer
Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.
Prior to indoor plumbing people commonly bathed or did washing in a portable tub, the contents of which were then *tossed* or thrown out into the yard.
The expression signifies not doing something dire or damaging while in the process of doing something routine or habitual.

| Hi ... qwerty ...
Maybe the all got thrown out with the daily Braingle bathwater ????
No .... (we must be serious, here) ... although you and I might be familiar with the expression there are LOTS of people who grew up in families, or regions, or parts of the world who never used that expression.
Simply because these are often called "common phrases" does not mean they are "common" to us all or that we should be critical of those who haven't heard them.
There was a recent rebus based on "dragged through a hedge backwards" that I reacted to for the wrong reasons. Although I was familiar with the phrase, having seen it several places in the literature over the past years, I was negative in that I felt it was a colloquial that was LOCALIZED too much (not that well-known to us USA Yankee jerks). Obviously the editors differed with me (not the first time). I should have taken my own advice and backed off.
Thank you for the visit and the comment.
