Nice, I like that one!
Good one!
actually the correct answer is seventeen
I think the answer is wrong. I'm sorry but I get 79. What am I doing wrong? Email me at [email protected]
[84+84+84+84+(avg-4)]\5=avg
336+avg-4=5avg
332+avg=5avg
332=5avg-avg
332=4avg
avg=83 therefore, 5 less than that is 79.

Ya, I'm sure of it now. The answer is definitly 79. Email me if you can't figure out why or if you don't know how to properly to averages. Double check your answers before you post them. [email protected]
Ok. Last post. Someone emailed and said that there are two ways to look at the problem. With that in mind, it could be either 16 (not 17) or 79. Sorry 'bout that everyone.
Stumped me!
gah, read that as 84 candies in each, which explains my thorough confusion, got it, sorry...
Very easy. Since the one bag has four less than the average, then the four bags must have four more than the average, making the answer (84-4)/4 - 4 = 16.
Say they all had 20 then that would be 100 candles. But if bag 5 has 4 less making sixteen then those 4 are redistributed to the other 4 bags making 84. Works for me! Good teaser.
