My Name From A God
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
I'm the smallest of my kind, no doubt about that;
Compared to my brothers, I seem like a rat.
A blue face have I, a blue face, you know;
It's awfully cold here, with poisonous snow.
My name came from a god, a god with great might;
Although you know of me, I'm way out of your sight.
What am I?
Answer
The planet Pluto.
Stanza 1: Pluto is the smallest planet.
Stanza 2: Pluto's surface is blue because of frozen gases. The snow is a methane and nitrogen snow that is poisonous to us.
Stanza 3: Pluto is the Roman god of the Underworld (Hades in Greek myths). Pluto is too far away to be seen from Earth (without a telescope).

| Initially I'd guessed Pluto, but then I recanted because Pluto is no longer a planet!
Good teaser, even if it is a little outdated now. ;-) |
dennisdalton
Oct 23, 2008
| Too easy, and I agree, a bit outdated. For those of you that are unaware, Pluto is no longer our 9th planet. |

| I thought of Venus, because I thought Pluto wasn't a planet anymore!!!! |
matap821
Oct 23, 2008
| yea i dont believe that pluto is the smallest or farthest away in any category any more. also not blue, which forced me to think it was neptune, the smallest of the gas giants |

| "Rat" got me stuck on trying to think of an animal - and where in the world was "poisonous snow?" And of course, it wasn't in THIS world!

| Pluto's not a planet anymore!?! They can't just take back something our teachers ingrained into us from kindergarten! Wait a second, it's happened many times...
(I really did know scientists changed Pluto's status) |

| Easy because the poisonous had to be on another planet. Pluto will always be a planet to me, just like St. Christopher will always be the patron saint of travellers to me. Thanks for a good one. |

Oct 23, 2008
| I thought is was Neptune. Smallest of the outer planets now that Pluto is a planatoid and not a planet. Also, not so sure Pluto is blue. Neptune is however. |
blove1974
Oct 23, 2008
| I agree nolonger a planet, should have posted this one a few years back. |

| Haven't seen this one before but a few days ago there was another riddle with the same answer, Pluto. |
Caliban
Oct 26, 2011
| yes, I am afraid that events have somewhat overtaken this answer. Pluto is no longer one of the planets, and Hubble has shown Pluto to be brown, not blue. Neptune is the smallest of the gas planets, it is (very) blue and composed largely of frozen methane. It is named after the powerful god of the sea. |
