Brain Teasers
Alternate Dictionary Definitions IV
This teaser is based on 'funny' alternative definitions a word could have if you broke the word up into its syllables and treated the syllables as words in themselves. I will provide a list of words or names and a list of definitions, it is your job to match them up.
They are meant to be a bit light hearted and may not have perfect pronunciation so work the words in your head a bit. Having the definitions should provide help in this regard. Also note that sometimes the 'new word' syllables may not only be using one syllable in the word.
An example would be:
Word: Contemplate "Con template": A stencil that criminals are made from.
Words:
Primate
Innovation
Awesome
Control
Bernadette
Definitions:
A short, ugly inmate
The act of removing your spouse from in front of the TV
A rousing applause for the motel/hotel
The act of torching a mortgage
A unit of measurement for the number of rowing implements used

I've probably mentioned this elsewhere, but send me a PM with a working E-mail address - or a webbie - and I'll send you my E-book of 13,000 p_ns (err...ahhh ... 'scuse ..) FAD*-words ...
(*FunnyAlternativeDefinitions)
Most (if not all) of what you've already got in I,II,III,IV were in there, but there's LOTS more.
I probably won't be able to use them ... (it's called the "turtle-total" syndrome) ...
Also ... anybody else who wants 'em. PM me. It's a freebie.
I'd like to see MORE of these on Braingle. LOTS of fun !!!!

I don't think the Awesome makes sense. How do you get Oar and Sum out of it. I can see the sum, but Awe and Oar don't sound similar. But otherwise I thought it was a good teaser.
Good teaser but sounds really familiar. Can't place it but will eventually. Maybe my mind has retained so many bits and pieces of each teaser I read they are beginning to appear the same.
Welcome LBE!

ok
As far as pronouncing "awesome," it depends on where you are from. If you are a "yankee" you would have a "r" sound in there due to your dialect. But down south we pronounce it "ausum."
Still, good teaser.

Thanks everyone. There will certainly be pronunciation issues with these teasers which is the main reason I have used the approach I have in submitting them in groups. Elf, a number of these are certainly not original and I got the idea from an e-mail I received with a bunch of them and figured they would make a great teaser. Since then I have started making my own so that hopefully this will indeed become a legacy ;) . Thanks for the offer, but don't worry about sending me the book, I am kind of happy now making them up for myself after getting the kick start from another source. They seem to be well liked so I'm happy they continue to give others a laugh or something fun to solve. Cheers .
Yay! That was a lot of fun!
Great, thanks Smurfy
Good teaser but i too didn't get the "awesome-oar sum" one. plus, i am from up north and don't add an "r sound" in "awesome" as darthforman said "yankees" do.
Thanks... yeah that awesome one is a bit of a topic for discussion. Pleased you liked it though.
Might be because I'm English, but Awe and Oar sound the same to me.
This was so fun!
You have a gift.

Thanks Jacstop.
These were great! You've inspired me to make some up. I always put things like this in my kids' lunchboxes for them to try to figure out w/their friends at lunchtime... I'm going to send these tomorrow! (Probably not the awesome one, although I like it, they probably won't get it!)
Thanks . Love the idea about the lunches.
A little too easy, with the words there. Maybe if the puzzle were just the wacky definitions, and then put the words as the hint, it would be better.
Zag... your point is true, these aren't the hardest but they hopefully are fun. I have considered that approach before but realistically, I think you would get far more people saying they are unsolvable once you actually take the words away as it is a big stretch to get from definition to answer unless the answer is actually there I think.
I quite agree, dsquared. The fun is in the linguistic twist. There is plenty of scope on Braingle for those who enjoy the intellectual stretch!
