Granted it's not a common word, but it works anyways.....

*talkin
I thought bowsprit, too, even though I've never used the word before.
In spite of last years dialogs, this was a cleaver little teaser.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, "I" LIKED IT.
AND YES BOWSPRINT IS A COMMON WORD.
AND YES BOWSPRINT IS A COMMON WORD.
Bowsprit was the first word that came to my mind also - had to look at the answer to see "newspaper". Wonder what that says?
Cute-cute-cute! I went 'arrghh! when I read the answer. MORE!
That was good, although I would have liked a few like that together. I didn't get it, but didn't try because aside from searching with computer how do you find something like that? And newspaper is waaaaaaaay more common than bowsprit or whatever the word is because I saw a few different spellings above. Thanks!
I like this one.Made you think.
not common either, but NEWSPEAK, deliberately ambiguous and contradictory language used to mislead and manipulate the public.
This was a great teaser! I didn't get it and had to look up the answer, and when I saw what it was... newspaper... I thought, "Well, DUH!!" And BTW... what in the world is a "bowsprint" or "bowsprit?" I've never in my life heard that word, and I've been around the block a few times...
How about newsprint? It's more common than bowspirit.
Good job, even though I didn't get it I thought that I would still add my opinion.I think that people on here shouldn't say anything if they can't say something nice about people's teasers.I haven't seen one yet that someone hasn't said something negative.I think you done good so keep up the good work.
this was very easy i hope your next one is harder it tooko me 2 seconds

Congrats on getting teaser of the day! This one either comes to mind quickly or can be quite elusive if the brain doesn't take us in the right direction. We also saw some good alternative answers. Thanks for the tease!
(Side note: let's not use the comment area to chat amongst ourselves .. we have a great forum area and chat for that!)
Hope to see more of your teasers!

The hint "Read" actually confirmed my initial suspicion of the answer being "newspeak" - i.e. read 1984!
I did end concluding newspaper was probably the answer intended however.

i did not get this but thought it was great...i think that people are way to petty in here though...it is a brain teaser it is supposed to be fun and alot of people only want to criticize...do you not have better things to worry about??
Cool... Smee's was fun too. Keep it up, everyone!
Negativity can be creative and helpful, as long as it's not personal attacks.
way too hard
so easyyyyyy!!!!
I actually had to think! OUCH!
'Newspeak' is almost 60 years old. 'Bowpsint' yields 34 hits on google. 'Bowsprint' a whopping 251. Get over yourselves, and nice tease!
Nice! besides wut im saying now thats all i have to say!
I got 380,000 for "bowsprit" on Google. I liked this one a lot.
BTW... the reason I didn't submit my "teaser" above was because I haven't accumulated enough "points" to submit teasers yet. I'm not one of those "paying" customers, and I need at least 250 points to submit one. I'm glad y'all enjoyed it though, and I appreciate the nice comments!!
Hey Smee, good one, too. I enjoyed them both. Thanks.
Enjoyed the heck out of this one. I did get it. And Smee, I really enjoyed your teaser. I've got some too, but am not a paying customer eaither. Have considered it, but will wait for a while.
It pays to read "THE NEWSPAPER",
I figured out the WSP>
Another good one, which will be added to my "FAVS"

ha..ha.. that was funny..
Three things,

I liked the puzzle a lot. But I would have liked to solve a few more at the same time! Thanks!
Cute but easy. I needed an easy one today. Thanks.
Oh my gosh I clicked on the hint and it said "read" but I thought that I clicked on the answer and I was like what the heck? Read does not have any of those letteres. I was so confused. But it's okay now. Phew. I'm not insane.
Right...
It wasn't that easy for me. I had to look at the hint and then I got it. Thanks!
I looked at the Hint and still could not figure "Newspaper." I guess Newspaper is a common word, perhaps not a English Common Word. Something is amiss with this Teaser, even though I liked this teaser and it was Corrected on one or more points of accuracy.
Great puzzle! I got it after the hint. Do more!
Couldn't think of the common word until I read the hint. I thought of bowsprit first, and then newspeak, neither falling under the designation 'common', but the hint gave it to me, which doesn't bother me. Liked it.
rowspan
I was lost until I saw the hint--was then able to rack that brain a bit & finally got it--thank you!! that was fun!! Btw, I'm thinking some of those comments would discourage entries--please don't let that happen!
nice. Had to use clue to get.. was workin' bowsprit til then
A sloppy old puzzler isn't it? I also thought of bowsprit first (we're not all reading at an elementary level) then newspeak which brought me to newspaper and so forth. It would be nice if the question was tweaked by giving "a 9-letter word" or whatever as part of the clue to rule out the other dozen and a half possible answers.
Aside from fun, the point of playing word puzzle games is to improve our minds surely, not to falsely praise ourselves over small mistakes.

"Newsprint", which was the first word that occurred to me, also works.
Good one! Thanks for posting!
!!!! Newspaper !!!
I too thought of "bowsprit" first and dispute those who say it is not a common word. Just because you have never heard of it does not mean it is uncommon. Anyone who reads a lot would likely have come across it at some point as would anyone who is into boats.
Though I didn't come up with it I like the answer Newspeak and it certainly would work with the hint.
Not sure why I couldn't come up with newspaper though.

bowsprit here also
Widowspeak
Sorry - I wanted to delete widowspeak...but I can't figure out how. Widowspeak is a rock group or two words. Oops.
Bowsprit
Newsprint
Newspeak

That was a good one and it amazes me how many people want to get in on the act by coming up with more words of their own. Let the author get his or her credit and then go enter one of your own through the right channels.
There's a reason this riddle had the qualifier "common." Admittedly "newspaper" isn't as common as it used to be, but it's more likely to come up in conversation than "bowsprit."
I went with newsprint rather that answer. On a less serious note -- coWSPanker. Not everyday but creative. Mr. BoWSPangles?? OK I will stop
I didn't get this until I looked at the hint.
I liked this puzzle a lot. I think the easy/hard rating is determined by how you initially attack the puzzle. Clearly, it is some sort of compound word. Try to parse it as W/SP leads to freaky solutions like bowsprit (which I've never heard of), or just getting stuck. Once you try to break it as WS/P, it falls out fairly easily. I actually started at newsperson, then went to newsprint. I laughed at myself for missing newspaper when I read the answer!
Fun and entertaining teaser. I had to ponder this one for awhile before coming up the correct answer "Newspaper". I did not think of any of the other words the previous commenters came up with - "Newpaper" was the first thing that came to my mind.
