Brain Teasers
You're Grounded
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Homer was impatiently waiting for his son Ed to come home. Ed had been caught speeding by the police just last week, and had been warned against doing it again. Just as Homer saw the car come up the driveway, he went outside. "Looks like you made it home awful quickly tonight," said Homer.
"Come on dad, I wasn't speeding," replied Ed.
"I'm not sure I believe you," said Homer. "Leave the car on and move over so I can get in. We are going for a ride."
When they returned home, Ed went straight up to his room, grounded for the next 2 weeks.
How did Homer know he was speeding?

How did Homer know he was speeding?
Answer
Ed had a habit of using his cruise control when he drove, and Homer knew this. Once they made it to the freeway, Homer hit the RESUME button on the cruise control. The vehicle then accelerated up to 82 mph, the last speed that Ed had set.Busted...
Most cruise control systems have a RESUME feature, which will return the vehicle to its last set speed. This speed is stored in memory until the cruise control is turned off or the vehicle is turned off. Most people, when they drive, will just hit the brake which will disable the cruise control functionality, but the last speed set will remain in memory. (Note: not all cars function in this manner.)
Drive safely, obey the speed limits, and use your seat belts.

That was a really cool teaser!! I wish I could think of something like that!! I would get a major headache!!!
Nice. I guess i just don't know enough about cars...
A fable teaser. Great.
too much to assume for me...one that the car had cruise, though most do. But, two, that the kid used the cruise and set it at a speed higher than the limit.
That is what the category of situation is all about. Not all the facts are there, you are supposed to come up with a possible conclusion. See top of teaser for explaination.
Good answer. But a more simple answer would be is that he read the odometer and the amt of time the car was running and can then figure the average speed.
The teaser implied that he was home early than the dad expected. This would only give you an average speed, and not the high speed that was last saved. Other factors like traffic, etc, could have come into play.
cool teaser....
this teaser remind me of my bro getting so many tickets for speeding. He still speed
Once i went to a ride with him....on the open road...he went about 120 MPH. Thankfully, he didnt got cought.

cool teaser! but i'd neva have figured it out no matter how hard i tried - i'm only 13
its dun really matter how old u r!!!
good one! very clever
Only question I have:
How can his dad be certain that he used the cruise control this time?
If he'd been busted by the police last week, and hadn't used the cruise control since then, then it could be set at the same speed from when he got his ticket.
Poor boy was innocent, and got busted anyway. If I was him, I'd look for a good lawyer.

When the car is shut off, the speed setting clears. It was a guess on the dad's part, that his son had used the CC, but a correct guess.
confusin... wud neva of got the answer... but stil a gd teaser neway!!!
i m only 13 cant drive and my parents dont have any cars but i still got.LOVE IT!!!!!
what if he didnt use the cruise control that day? evidence is all circumstancial
