Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
After her death, a mother left her sons her entire £5000 fortune.
The elder son received £3000.
The rest was shared equally between whomever remained.
How much did they each get?
The elder son received £3000.
The rest was shared equally between whomever remained.
How much did they each get?
Answer
There is just one other son who takes the remaining £2000.The word elder means there are two. If there were more than two it would have been eldest.

that was good you almost had me! but then i saw elder
hehe, Heres where having been in psat classes for 2 years and studying many times the difference between er and est becomes handy!
Ahh, I added another element to the trick...
You said the elder brother "had" £3000. This to me says that he had that money BEFORE he got his inheritance.
My answer was £2500 each.
It may be better to change the word "had" to "got" or "received".
After all is said and done, I DO like the teaser!

Nice
ooooooh, i get it now, heehee, that's a good one
This is a language teaser, not a trick teaser. Possibly it would qualify as a trick teaser for folks for whom English is a second language but we don't have that category. What are these "editors" doing with all their time? and how does this sludge trickle through??
unkle myke, don't be so mean, although I do agree it's a language teaser. But it's not sludge.
unklemyke man loosen up. yes its in the wrong category but its nothing to have a heart attack over.
need it to be more exciting

Heh. I actually got it. o.O Nice one.
gOOD JOB!i GOT IT!!
Hmm I figured it was a trick and the taxes ate the rest-haha Fun
didn't know that! good trick, loved it.
Very good from a "Younger".
Darn you and your grammer!!! Just kidding, I thought it was good b/c it makes you pay attention to details. I like teasers like that.
Surely the elder son got 4000, and the younger 1000? After all, they both remained after their mother died.
Very nice, dutchy!
I thought there was just one son . . .the taxes got the rest. It is a trick after all Great job
you tricky grammarian you!
You said she shared it between her SONS, plural, which means there is more than one. That just throws off the whole teaser.
Of course there is more than 1
There could have been 3 or 4....
