Fell From A Star
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
It fell from a star,
But not very far.
It seems to fly
Above you and I.
Look further down to see
Cousin Jay below us three.
Jump down further to see an empty space.
Tell me what "it" is, and where is this place?
HintAbove the star you may just find
A place designated for a function of some kind.
To its left is seven and to its right you'll find nine,
I should tell you that there is no in front or behind.

Answer
By looking at the standard US-style keyboard, you see the answer is the number 8.
The 8 is below the asterisk, though on the same button.
It is above the letters U & I.
Underneath those is the letter J.
Skip a row down and you see the space bar.
Above the 8 are the F6 and F7 function keys.
To the left is the seven, which has the & symbol.
To the right is the number nine.

| Can't do riddles, not even simple ones like this.
Sitting in front of this keyboard 40 hours a week, and then 20 or more during off hours, it's the last thing in the world I think of when a question is asked! Also, working at a newspaper, the asterisk is just that. Never thought of it as a star. Alas! I do so much better on the language and spelling ones, but still like to play all the games anyway! |

| A nice, easy teaser for people that use the same keyboard layout as the author, but unfair to people to don't use what the author calls a "standard" keyboard. The location and availability of punctuation symbols can vary quite a bit depending on locality. Portuguese, Danish, and Swedish keyboards, among others, may have the opening parenthesis "(" above the 8 and the asterisk (a.k.a. "star") over by the Enter key. |

| That was a cute riddle -- and I got it! I think I was about to give up, but then glanced down at the keyboard to see Jay and U and I all gathered together quite conveniently under the *.
It's very unfortunate that this teaser isn't internationally applicable. Perhaps should a little apology should be included in the answer, to those people who don't have a U.S. keyboard? Obviously, there couldn't be a warning in the riddle itself, because that might give it away... |

| I liked it, but I didn't get it. I was going for something in the alphabet. The U, I, and J, of course, and the "empty space" I thought was O. I thought the letter was A, because it "fell from a stAr," and A is the only letter in star that comes before both of those. I just ignored the 7 & 9 clues.
I can come up with extremely creative wrong answers. Great teaser! |
