Grandpa Jones says:
`My son Adam is 24 years younger than me and 35 years older than my grandson, Joey. Together our total ages add up to 100.` Can you figure out the age of each one of them?

I used the equations:
(A) Grandpa = Adam + 24
(B) Adam = Joey + 35
(C) Grandpa + Adam + Joey = 100

then substitued so I was workng with "Joey"s (Grandpa = Joey + 24 + 35; Grandpa = Joey + 59)

so then equation (C) is:
(Joey + 59) + (Joey + 35) + Joey = 100
simplifies to:
3Joey + 94 = 100
3Joey = 6
Joey = 2

since Joey = 2
(B) Adam = 35 + 2
Adam = 37

(A) Grandpa = 24 + 37
Grandpa = 61

confirm:
Grandpa + Adam + Joey = 100
61 + 37 + 2 = 100
100 = 100

... um, yeah all my friends are math majors, I guess it rubbed off on me

great teaser

That was fun and great for those of us whose forte isn't math (though we keep trying). Thanks for a nice teaser!

I did the same thing as Stewie. Easy, but cute.

This worked for me:

Let 'a' equal Adam's age.

a + (a - 35) + (a + 24) = 100
3a - 11 = 100
3a = 111
a = 37

So Adam is 37, Gramps is 37 + 24, or 61, and Joey is 37 - 35, or 2.
