 I got the same answer via a different method: 4X1, 4X4, 4X9, 4X16, 4X25, after that it should go 4X36 which is 144......of course, I should have noticed they were perfect squares.

 Well, strictly speaking it would be 1 since you only had one question mark, but clearly you're doing squares of even numbers so if you get 100 or 1, you obviously got the pattern.

 I wasn't really certain if this one would end in a 10 or a 00.
Everything before it had been specifically "keyed" for a 2digit answer...

??  I thought I was looking for a 2 digit answer.
If this is going to have a 3 digit answer, then the first number doesn't need to be 04, as it's kind of confusing the way it's written.
