Identify the fruits and vegetables from the following clues:

(Don't assume that you know how part of a clue is pronounced. There may be more than one way!)

1. "Mom, may we please go outside? Will you please let us play? PLEASE! PLEASE!"

2. Another name for a taxi + the rings in a tree indicate what? = ___________________.

3. A pool stick + C + a burnt brownish color = ______________________.

4. Your mother pairs socks at the toes.

5. A drink + me + the end of the word "talon" = _____________________.

Answer

1. Lettuce
2. Cabbage
3. Cucumber
4. Tomato
5. Watermelon

Explanation of each answer:

1. The words "let us" point to lettuce.

2. Cab is another name for a taxi, and the rings in a tree tell its age. When we combine cab and age, cabbage is the result.

3. A pool stick is called a cue stick. Burnt umber is a brownish color. When we combine cue, c, and umber, cucumber is the result.

4. Mating socks is an expression for pairing socks. When mating socks at the toes, tomato is the result.

5. Water is a drink. When we combine water, me, and "lon", watermelon is the result.

Since you made a reference about the clues and how they might be pronounced, I thought #1 was PEAS....ya know when some small children say please it sounds like peas! #4 made no sense at all to me. Great job though!

#4 should've been pair/pear. The tomato part just BARELY makes a little bit of sense. Otherwise, a good teaser.

NOT SURE WHAT TO SAY,
AS A TEASER, IT IS GOOD,
AS A RE-RUN, IT'S BORING.

I AM SURE MANY OTHERS CAN REMEMBER THE ANSWERS FROM YEAR TO YEAR AS WELL
yoyoyo*af*
Feb 01, 2007

didnt get #4 due to cultural gap! I'm from the UK, you say tom-ay-to, I say tom-ah-to!
katjojoAus*
Feb 01, 2007

You stumped me on tomato. But I got all of the rest. Yeah!! Such a fun way to start my morning.

Plus, IMURRAY, not all of us know that these are re-runs. I have never seen it before!
bradon182001*us*
Feb 01, 2007

#4 was a bit of a stretch I think and like someone else I thought #1 was peas. Good thought provoking teaser
phyllisa*us*
Feb 01, 2007

I really liked this one. I didn't get tomatoes and lettuce so no salad for me!
Pizzazz2uAus*
Feb 01, 2007

A fantastic teaser! Keep up the great work! As for Lmurray.. you have to realize that he doesn't know how to keep from tearing a teaser apart. No matter what! LOL Otherwise! No big deal! He doesn't realize that anyone can say something to *run down* an item, an action or an individual, even on the best of days.
AbsurdHero*us*
Feb 01, 2007

The "mating pairs" reference was a bit too obscure for me. Fun overall though.
craniacAus*
Feb 01, 2007

I agree the solution to #4 (toe + mate + toe) was too obscure for me. I came up with pear (from pair), but knew it was wrong. After I saw the answer, I came up with a more gestalt explanation: toe + ma (short for mama) + toe, which solves the problem of how to pronounce the ma segment, even though this solution is a bit short on logic. But who cares? The teaser was fun.
campfirecutieAus*
Feb 01, 2007

Wonderful teaser!! I got all but one of them so not that bad for me!! Good job!!
scallioAus*
Feb 01, 2007

Tomato was a stretch, but the rest were a piece of cake. Does cake go with veggies?

Anyway, fun teaser.

Feb 01, 2007

I got tomato after I saw the answer to number one. The other three were easy, but fun.
Trishgal*us*
Feb 01, 2007

I really did enjoy it although I thought it was hard. THX
lucagrellaus*
Feb 01, 2007

I assumed #4 was explained as, what mother does is "to mate toes" hence tomatoes. Sadly, the only one I didn't get was #1, which was pretty simple, especially since it's the only one where the homonym was right there in the clue. I kept trying to think of a fruit or vegetable that sounded like "kids beg." :~}

I didn't come up with tomato either. Maybe I need more fertilizer (although I've been told at times that I'm full of it already!) Fun teaser!

Feb 01, 2007

I THOUGHT IT WAS BURNT AMBER,NOT UMBER. OR AM I WRONG?? ANYBODY??
hoyty**
Feb 01, 2007

I thought tomato was kind of a stretch but the rest were fun.
tamjpAus*
Feb 01, 2007

Tomato was good , lettuce was a stretch.

It was an ok teaser because it took a bit a braingling to figure out. I liked the rebusy ones.

I have to honestly admit that it seemed clumsy to me. To combine different formats for the clues made it seem rather random and awkward.

sorry but that is my honest opinion
tamjpAus*
Feb 01, 2007

tis indeed UMBER patpat

sorry
scm14Aus*
Feb 01, 2007

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought "peas" for # 1. The repetitive use of "Please" and in caps led me to that. I didn't even think "lettuce". I thought "pear" for #4...because mama was pairing (pearing) socks. Tomato didn't even cross my mind.
QrystalAca*
Feb 02, 2007

I got all except the one I was sure was pear. Oh well!

As for amber vs umber: amber's a golden yellow colour, umber's a brown colour.

Overall, I agree with tamjp, except that I thought the lettuce one was okay and the tomato one was a little odd... I've never associated pairing of socks with mating! And it's the socks that are being matched with their mates, not the toes! I don't know. I guess it works alright, but the pear idea seemed too similar to the lettuce one to not be the answer.
cassiemarkAus*
Feb 02, 2007

I liked it - didn't get tomato, but the rest were good!

Feb 03, 2013

I found them to be pretty easy -- except for tomato - I even had to think about it for a while after I saw the answer, then finally caught on! - and I am familiar with "mating socks at the toes"! Over all, very good teaser!!
