Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.

A spoonerism is a pair of words that can have their initial sounds switched to form new words. The pairs need only sound the same, not necessarily be spelled the same (power saw & sour paw, horse cart & coarse heart). There may sometimes be one or two connecting words (kick the stone & stick the cone, king of the rats & ring of the cats). Given the following definitions, what are the spoonerisms?

1) a circular depression & a part for a canine actor
2) a container for an alcoholic beverage & an insignificant insect
3) a container for a container & the bottom of a coffin
4) a cunning wolf relative & insect foot coverings

Sep 21, 2006

Oooo, I'm first today ...and it's the first day of autumn ...and I didn't get a single one of the spoonerisms.
Sep 21, 2006

That was fun thankyou!

Though I really enjoy language teasers, for some reason I have a problem with Spoonerisms. This one was no exception. It was fun trying to figure them out. Good job.
Sep 21, 2006

i didnt get any........ o well...they r still good!
Sep 21, 2006

I got the first and the last. Great puzzle!
Sep 21, 2006

I got the first one just looking at it and then totally bombed! I just couldn't get past beer glass (?) & then went into brain freeze. Great teaser
Sep 21, 2006

LOL! Brain Freeze! heehee!

This was very hard, for me at least. Usually, if you can just find ONE word, like for no. 1: circular depression, try "hole", then find a rhyme for "hole" that would be right for "a part for a canine actor", role! THEN, ya see, you KNOW that the other word for "hole" has to start with an "r", and the other word for "role" starts with "h". Circular depression, you already have "hole" for depression, circular, starts with "r", um... ROUND! Now you can easily figure out the fourth word: hound! This is me being Mr. Smarty Pants because I didn't get two of them so I'm compensating. I just didn't think of "base" for bottom, although it totally valid, and although I thought of "casket" and "basket", I just couldn't get the fourth word this time, even with my Mr. SmartyPants foolproof method...

Very good teaser, hard! Thanks!
Sep 21, 2006

The 'fly socks' nearly basket cased me. But it was still a Good One.
Sep 21, 2006

Nice one TNX, only got 1st & last but still enjoed `em
Sep 21, 2006

Difficult for me, but still loved it! Missed number one. Got hung up on "bit part" (canine actor), and Bart Pit (Brad's brother)... ..... I certainly appreciated the time and effort that must go in to creating these. Thanks for submitting another good one!
Sep 21, 2006

PS: My wife says that Brad Pitt doesn't have a brother named Bart... She knows, she's checked.
Sep 21, 2006

Nice one, made me think. 3 of 4, fly socks stumped me.
Sep 21, 2006

I LVE these, but I was in too much of a hurry to take time and work them out. Still, they are very clever and give the brain a good workout ...
They're going into my faves!!!
Sep 21, 2006

Darn, I just couldn't get those last two! Had a great time trying though. Great teaser!
Sep 21, 2006

Actually did o.k.Enjoyed them could not figureout 3. so I looked and that was it. The answer was not hard
Sep 21, 2006

I can enjoy trying to figure your spoonerisms. These were a little tough for me. You have an extraordinary mind-set, keep up the superb work. Awesome teaser, too
Sep 21, 2006

LOL at Badger's comment. Too funny! Anyways, I also have a really hard time with these. I wasn't even close. But, it got my brain attempting to solve them! Good one!
Sep 21, 2006

Number 3 was the hard one. I didn't come up with the base and case words.
Sep 21, 2006

I haven't been on here for a long time but I see the teasers are still very good ones, and very fun to figure out. Even though I didn't get any of this one. Must be rusty from being away so long.
Sep 21, 2006

Sep 21, 2006

I enjoy trying these, but my brain doesn't work very well on them!!
Sep 22, 2006

I agree with the one above. I do like trying these , but, I my mind find it hard. Thanks keeps me mind going.
Sep 23, 2006

I liked this one a lot, got 1 & 4. Suggestion: Try another word instead of container it gets confusing.
Sep 24, 2006

Nice job. Went right over my head but that's not your fault - my brain just isn't in gear today. Morre please, amybe I'll do better.
Sep 24, 2006

Goit # 1 and 4 easily but the other two stumped me. I did know that 'base' comes somewhere but didnt fit in 'casket', as 'carton' was a misleading solution in my mind!

Great teaser, and please do keep these coming - I like these a lot!
Sep 25, 2006

3.5 / 4 ain't bad!! I'm the exact opposite to the first poster (teen_wiz): I AM blonde, and I got all except the last one!! I knew it would be fox and socks, but just wasn't SLY enough to figure it out and FLY away from this teaser, laughing.

Oh, but I am laughing still!
Aug 28, 2007

Yay! I actually got all of them this time! Number 2 was way too easy, but the rest made me think. Great job, as always!
Sep 21, 2009

I never saw a fly wearing socks. So that's why I couldn't get the last one.
Sep 21, 2009

Come on doehead, everyone knows that flies only wear socks with their running shoes, otherwise they wear pantyhose that blend in and are hard to see but give great support.
I support this teaser as a fun job. Well done!
Sep 21, 2009

Fun! Thanks!
Sep 21, 2009

The flies in our part of the country also wear argyles with their golfing shoes. But knowing that didn't help me. I didn't get a single one of these.
Sep 21, 2009

I got a couple, missed a couple. But everybody knows that this time of year the flies dig out their socks. That was the only one I got easily.
Sep 21, 2009

Sep 21, 2009

nice one doehead, patiencewithaP, and craniac! VERY FUNNY!! this was a great teaser!!! i got none i always look at the answers too fast to figure them out.
Sep 21, 2009

oh dang it! i forgot! builder u r very funny too! (i forgot to add u 2 the funny list!)
Sep 21, 2009

As usual, I was it a big hurry to see the answers; so I didn't figure any of them out. It was a fun puzzle, though.
Sep 22, 2009

Great teaser, I got stuck on #3 but got the rest.
Sep 21, 2012

I only got the last one. It was a good teaser, but the clues were not very desciptive . At least I did not think so.
Sep 21, 2012

I really loved this one. I liked it that most of the answers made sense (beer mug, round hole, basket case, sly fox) which made it very slightly easier, though I did get out my thesaurus to get them all.

For "a container for an alcoholic beverage & an insignificant insect"

I came up with cider spoon and spider coon, but thought no way will that be the answer and carried on looking!
Sep 21, 2012

I guess flies wear black socks, that's why they are hard to see.
Sep 21, 2012

lots of fun, 'tho I didn't spend enough time on them to get them all! thank you for the brain stretch!
Sep 21, 2012

Got 2 and 4.
Sep 21, 2012

Got 2 and 4.
Sep 21, 2012

In 3, got hung up at casket / basket and couldn't find the easier parts - case / base 'cuz I was overthinking it for a special name of a coffin's bottom half. Drats!
