Thunderstorm
Science brain teasers require understanding of the physical or biological world and the laws that govern it.
Without the aid of anyone or anything, how is it possible to tell how far away a thunderstorm is, from where you stand?
Answer
Light travels at 186,000 miles per second and sound travels about one mile every five seconds. Since the thunder is the product of lightning, when you see the lightning you should begin to count until you hear the thunder. In this way you are able to tell how far the thunder has travelled. Example: If you see lightning and are able to count to ten before you hear the thunder, you know that the storm is about two miles away.

| Not to be picky or anything, but then you would need the aid of both the light of lightning and the sound of thunder, not to mention the ability to count, etc.
It's hard to say you do anything without the aid of ANYTHING |

| I have to add to the nitpickiness. Even if you altered the question to refer to physical things, possibly eliminating thunder and lightning, you are aided by your own eyes and ears, and they are most definitely physical things. A nifty teaser though, good information!! |
