The thing you see with + The 12th letter of the alphabet + A white pigeon - The 4th letter of the alphabet + A female sheep + A word meaning $1,000 + A thing used to clean floors - The 16th letter of the alphabet.
What is this phrase?
HintA dove is a white pigeon.
Hide
Answer
I love you Grandma.
Explanation:
The thing you see with = EYE (pronounced "I")
+ The 12th letter of the alphabet = L
+ A white pigeon = Dove
- The 4th letter of the alphabet = D
+ A female sheep = EWE (pronounced You)
+ A word meaning $1,000 = Grand
+ A thing used to clean floors = Mop ( the o has a short vowel sounding like "ah")
- The 16th letter of the alphabet = P
Eye (I) + L + Dove-D (ove) + EWE (You) + Grand + Mop-P (pronounced Ma)
I + L + ove + You + Grand + Ma = I Love You Grandma

| You know what, I'm not making this up, I just emailed my gma before I read this teaser, and of course told her I loved her, sent it then came to Braingle! That's wild!
When I don't "get it", I usually blame it on the author, not myself, LOL! But for real, I think if you made the minus signs the word minus or made them more obvious, it would be much better, because I thought those were hyphens, like others did, because, they could have been, they look the same.
Aside from that it was very good, thanks! |

Apr 05, 2007
| Aww, how cute. Nice title too.
I didn't get it because I didn't see how "albino" would work for the white pigeon, and didn't know another word for it; "dove" did cross my mind, but a dove isn't a pigeon, so I was sure I was wrong... and I gave up. Oops. |
Qrystal
Apr 05, 2007
| OK so I was wrong about the dove/pigeon thing. They're both members of the columbidae family, so I guess that's close enough. But I've seen white pigeons around here, which made me think there must be something else that they're called. Doves are in the same family, and not all are white, but of course I know that the classic image of a dove is white...
ANyways, just wanted to clear that up. Still a nice teaser. |

| I got it, but have a few issues still.
Even if a dove and pigeon are both members of the same family (columbidae ) does not make them the same animal. A wolf and a Chihuahua are both in the canine family, but are hardly the same animal.
At first I didn't look at the pronunciation of the word, but just what it read on paper, so had "I love you grandmo, since I knew this had to be wrong I guessed grandma. |
skippington
Apr 13, 2013
| according to wikipedia,"In general, the terms "dove" and "pigeon" are used somewhat interchangeably. In ornithological practice, "dove" tends to be used for smaller species and "pigeon" for larger ones, but this is in no way consistently applied, and historically, the common names for these birds involve a great deal of variation between the terms." so i believe the author of the teaser was correct to describe a dove as a white pigeon. |
