For Show and Tell at school, Mary told her class that today was the birthday of both her father and her grandfather and that they were exactly the same age. Her teacher said that was impossible, but Mary insisted she was right. Can you explain how she could be right?

Mary was talking about her father and her maternal grandfather.

Her father, for example, could be 50 and her mother`s father, her maternal grandfather, could be 50. Her mother is obviously younger than her father.

May 28, 2005

well, dark-prince - thats a disturbing oedipus complex type deal, and petera, if they were BOTH born on feb 29th, years apart, then the grandfather would still be older. not AS much (4 instead of 16 years, 6 instead of 24, etc) but they still wouldnt be the same age

Deep breath...

I thought that the girl's father abandoned her and, her grandfather adopted her. Therefore i assumed she called her grandfather her father and, considered them one and the same. Good one.

At first, I thought that it was a trick question - both her father and grandfather were 0 days old on their birthday! Then, I realized that it was a logic question, and got stumped.
Sep 08, 2006

I got it! I think I heard of one somewhat similar some time ago and that probably helped. Good teaser!
Oct 27, 2006

omg i thought the answer was gonna say that her grandfather got her sister pregnant and they had her making her the grandchild and child lol.

First, excellent teaser!

Second, leap years come every 4 years, so someone born on Feb 29 still ages 4 years in between each Feb 29th.
May 02, 2007

dude if a man marries a woman who's father is as old as the man is.... that would make the man old enough to be the woman's father.. that's just not right. ><

Good thinker though. =)
Jul 29, 2007

Mom must be quite a bit younger than Dad.
Sep 27, 2007

well I hate to say it people, but it happens -- and it goes both ways --> younger men with much much MUCH older women as well. 20-30 year age difference is WAY too much for my tastes, but everyone is different I suppose...

Anyway -- great teaser!!!
