A Real "Dead One"
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
I can be straight or not
I can be flat or round
I have three layers
The rounder I am - the straighter I am
I can be a person's trademark
I can be chemically challenged
HintMy center layer is called a Medulla

| A toughie--but the light finally dawned. I was sure it had to be a tire (flat or inflated, with layers), until I looked at the hint. That got me thinking about the brain (medulla/brain stem?), which led to head, then to hair. I liked it! |

| Very good one! You would have had me stumped, but one of my best friends is a hair dresser. And with his knowledge and my barber's, the answer came quickly to me! It is amazing when one has friends in many fields of living, you can learn different techniques of building, styling, sports, gaming, gambling, road work, yard work, growing fruits, veggies, and raising of different stock, etc. Keep up the terrific work! I enjoy your teasers. |

| Easy, but fun! Could have been equally at home in the science category. Thanks for submitting. PS: Did you know that some companies use a lock of hair for employee drug screening? The longer your hair, the farther back they can go... The hair stores it all! |

| cool. I do not get the 'dead one' thing in the title, and it would have helped if I knew more about hair. I also would have changed chemically 'challenged' to chemically 'changed.'
Overall, it was clever, and better than some teasers I have read. |

| Wow! I got it!! I wasn't sure, but hair was my best guess... and I guess it couldn't get any better of a guess! I also guess that means the teaser was written well enough to be possible to solve, while it was also puzzling enough to be interesting to guess! Nice!! |

| I can be straight or not
I can be flat or round
The rounder I am - the straighter I am
Let me get this straight!
"Flat or round" means "flat is round" according to the answer
Straight hair is round
So if flat is round, and round is straight, then flat is straight.
Wait a second!
I thought flat was curly! |

| Answer
Hair
Straight hair is round in shape
Wavy or curly hair is flat in shape (the curlier the hair the flatter)
Hair consists of 3 layers -
Cuticle (outer layer)
Cortex (second layer)
Medulla (center layer)
Chemically challenged - permed, tinted, bleached, etc.
As you can see, in the answer I state that straight hair is round in shape, and wavy or curly hair is flat in shape. I really don't know what you are talking about. |

| it seems some people are confused by the description of curly hair being flat. curly hair under a microscope looks more like a flat ribbon rather than a round pole. the cross section of curly hair is elliptical, whereas straight hair is circular. |
jaycr

| FYI cutebug...
Caucasian hair: Cross Section: oval
African hair: Cross Section: flattened
Asian hair: Cross Section: round |
