Tinman and his brother, Billy Joe Jack, live in southern California in an area that has a history of constantly being underwater from flooding. Their house has a basement, which means that it isn't really safe from flooding. If they need to displace 10 gallons of water a minute to keep the basement dry, and on average, according to past events, there would be water every day, how much water would they have to displace in a 30 day month?

good trick
Jun 22, 2006

A bit too scientific for me...
Jun 22, 2006

Yea, you're right I guess...I don't know much about the history of california...Im from the EAST SIIIDE... But I heard that (singing) "It never rains in southern california"
Jun 22, 2006

got me
Jun 22, 2006

Never thought of it that way.
Jun 24, 2006

I didn't know that, but I did get the answer right. I live in California, so yea.
Jun 25, 2006

Hmm, didn't know that

I was wondering why it would be flooding in Southern California...

There is a word for a teaser like this - the word is "cheating"! Your clue reads, "Tinman and his brother, Billy Joe Jack, live in southern California in an area that has a history of constantly being underwater from flooding." Are you saying that there are NO areas in So. Calif. that are currently and constantly under water? Perhaps our boys built too close to the Salton Sea, or on the shore of Lake Elinore. Anyway, your answer that So. Calif. is all hills and plants smacks of poor research. Three lashes with a wet noodle and go back to Square One
Jun 27, 2006

Yeesh. All I said was it was hilly with plants. The Great plains are softly sloping hills, but that doesn't mean there aren't lakes. Simmer down some.
Jun 29, 2006

It said "**IF** they need to displace 10 gallons of water a minute to keep the basement dry", so you can't say in your answer that they don't have to do that. The answer conflicts with the question, and ruins the teaser

good grief
please try to enjoy the teasers submitted by obviously creative people
constructive criticism is fine
but cynicism has no place here

Jul 12, 2006

good job!

Jul 22, 2006

I got it but it took me a minute! You almost got me! Better luck next time!
Jul 23, 2006

Sir Combus has a valid point. I don't think you can just blow it off as cynicism, or imply that they have "bad karma". Just because you disagree doesn't mean that someone else is being mean-spirited.
Jul 23, 2006

Even the title is misleading.
Aug 16, 2006

If I remember correctly fishing was great, but water front property cost an arm and a leg then. Good teaser.
Oct 26, 2006

Well done
I like it
It is a bit confusing though
Nov 04, 2006

IF they had a house in History!
Apr 03, 2007

Great teaser!

It works, except for the fact that California didn't exist millions of years ago, in fact, nothing existed millions of years ago
Nov 02, 2008

I thought it was fine. I agree with an earlier post. The quetion says "if," so I guessed the right answer for a dif reason.
Jun 07, 2010

I agree with sir_combus.
Aug 24, 2010

IF I eat a $5 burger every day for 2 weeks, how much WOULD I spend?
??Answer: I don't!

...No! I think it's a great teaser idea, but not worded properly at the end.
Dec 22, 2010

more like a science brain teaser if you ask me
May 06, 2012

No. You see, there WAS no millions of years ago. The world is only about 8000 years old. I don't mean to be a smartypants, and sorry if you think differently.
Jul 08, 2013

Must be horrible to have to go through life actually believing the planet is 8000 years old. Unless you're 4 years old and slightly retarded. That's still pretty horrible, though.
