By Nature I Am Simple
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
By nature I am simple and have no wisdom in any way,
but now every wise man will follow my tracks;
now I dwell on earth, erewhile I roamed on high through the heavens;
I am white in appearance, though I leave black traces.
Answer
A quill.
A quill has no wisdom of its own, but the wisest of men and women have used them. They used to reside in the heavens because they were once the feathers of birds who flew through the air. It leaves the black trace from the ink, though the feather is usually white.
The hint, *X<3 means star-crossed lovers, words used to describe Romeo and Juliet, originally written in quill, by William Shakespeare.

| Very nicely done & clever, too! Difficult enough to make me think. Figured it was a writing instrument but the part about the heavens threw me off... until I started thinking wings & feathers. Good job!  |
