Carrie Marshall had recently joined the Riverside police force, and on the first day of her job, she was sent out to investigate a new homicide case. The murder involved a wealthy bachelor, Steven Andrews, who lived in an expensive, grand oceanside mansion. At the time of the murder, there had been five other people in the house: the cook, the maid, two friends, and his niece. Both the cook and maid had rooms in the mansion, and the three guests had all stayed overnight.

When Carrie got to the mansion, the five suspects had all been lined up in front of a large bay window. It was mid-afternoon, and through the window, Carrie could see the beautiful sunset.

Her partner, Lieutenant Linda Newton, who had arrived an hour earlier, sketched out the details for Carrie. All the suspects had agreed that Steven Andrews had been found murdered in the morning, shortly before six-thirty A.M, but he had been alive a few minutes past midnight, when they all headed to bed. Nobody had heard anything during the night. Mandy Andrews, the niece, had come down to the kitchen to get a glass of water, and on her way back upstairs, had passed the bay window, where she saw her uncle's dead body.

Carrie decides to begin interrogating the suspects as the lieutenant and two other officers go off to look for more evidence and clues. The suspects give the following testimonies:

Maid: "I retired to my room shortly past eleven last night, after cleaning the dining room where Mr. Andrews dined with his guests, and helped the cook put away the leftover food. I was reading a novel until about twelve-twenty, and heard occasional laughter and talk, although I couldn't make out the words. This morning, I heard a scream, which was from Miss Mandy, so I rushed down with the cook and his two friends. Mr. Andrews was laying dead in front of that window. The lieutenant moved his body about fifteen minutes before you arrived, but there was blood on the side of the head, from a gunshot, maybe. I didn't hear anything, but whoever did it could have used a muffler. I'm innocent, though."

Cook: "It's like the maid says. She was cleaning the dining room while I tidied up the kitchen, and we both stored the leftovers in the refrigerator and talked for a few minutes about his guests. I went upstairs and to my room about the same time she did, but fell asleep after I took a shower and brushed my teeth. That was about eleven-thirty maybe, and I slept soundly until this morning, when a scream woke me. I rushed downstairs with the others, and there was the body. I tell you, I didn't do it. I've been with Mr. Andrews for eight years, and he knows he can trust me."

Mandy: "I was up until midnight with my uncle and his friends, talking and joking around. I fell asleep at about one-fifteen, but woke at six-twenty-four, and was thirsty, so I went down to the kitchen to get a glass of water. On the way back, I passed by the bay window, the one behind us, and I could see the beautiful sunrise outside, but, sadly, my uncle was sprawled on the ground, with a huge bloody wound on the side of his head. I screamed and the others were here in just one or two minutes."

"That's enough," Carrie said abruptly, before the two friends of Mr. Andrews can say anything. "I know who did it. Lieutenant! We have our murderer!"

All five suspects, and the lieutenant and her two men, who came into the room at her call, look at Carrie.

Who murdered Steven Andrews, and how did Carrie know?

I really enjoyed reading this. Great story telling and even though it was fairly easy, great teaser.

I think you made the answer too obvious...As soon as I read that she looked out and saw the sunset, I knew that whoever the murderer was would say they saw a sunrise.

Still fun though, I guess.

The end would have more impact, in my opinion, if new information was not added.

This teaser is fun, but it could be edited a bit. There are a couple typos and the last couple sentences of the answer don't make much sense. Also the title makes it a bit too obvious. Perhaps a title like Murder In The Mansion would be better.

Liked the story.

I realize that this teaser is pretty easy. Thanks for the suggestions though.

good one, I got it but 4 the wrong reason. I thought it was because people didn't see the gunshot wound until Carrie's partner moved the body. oh well

Good job 4demo. Pretty simple but see where you tired to make it complicated, though Bay Window is too huge a clue. Try again..I admire your effort.

Hi!
I like the teaser, the way it was written, but I have to say it lacks a little bit of sense.

First, what Carrie catched was simply a lie (the girl said she saw the sunrise, which was impossible), but that doesn't make her a murderer. Even more, the comment was about something that was not important (the sunrise or sunset in a window is not related to the murder).

Second: lacks motive, weapon, logistics, etc. I know they are placed in the answer, but it would be more effective to have them in the story!

Third: The murder was commited during the morning, but it was not until mid afternoon that Carrie got to the house? Long time

So, is this bad comment? Not at all! The teaser is really good, but it can be improved (or the new ones everydody is expecting ) so the tips would be:
1. Add a motive, an opportunity and a weapon that may direct the attention to any of the suspects.
2. Make the climax clue more related to the crime (like the usual "how did you know he was stabbed?, nobody said that")

Good Work! and Keep them coming!

YES! I got it! But I thought also, since she was up at 6:24 am and that is before 6:30 she would have killed him anyway! This was so fun!

I was concentrating on the fact that all 5 suspects said that they'd seen him alive at midnight, yet the 1st two stories began with their going to bed in the 11 o'clock hour.. so how could they know he was still alive at midnight ?

NoQuestion - huh?? The niece can't have the same last name? Well, I'll have to tell my niece she has to change her last name now, since we apparently can't have the same last name.

NoQuestion - it wasn't said what side she was from, and it wasn't at all important to the plot anyway. Learn how to spell.

I quite enjoyed this teaser, although I found it quite easy - I think it's a good one for beginners, though, who could be easily lead astray by the times (I was focusing on that while I was reading).

Good job! willymapo made some great suggestions for you that I would second.

I have to agree with Wilymapo. The niece was a liar, but that doesn't mean she had to be the murderer. I enjoyed this teaser, but it needs a little work.

I too got the answer for the wrong reason they said he dies a couple of minutes after midnight and the neice was up past that so she was logicly the only one to kill him

Nice. I liked it because I could actually solve it.

good but there was one thing the revolver part you said nobody heard it but even if you use a silencer on a revolver there's a gap between the cylinder and barrel that lets sound escape so the murder weapon would still have been heard

I was wondering why the sun was setting in the middle of the afternoon...

Nov 15, 2007

It's mid-afternoon now and the sun is setting Well written. I figured it out although her lie doesn't necessarily make her a murderer... maybe you could put something about the detective knowing that the one caught in the lie was the murderer??? Not sure

I really liked this teaser but I wish it was a bit more difficult. It didn't really take long to figure out what happened. Great job though

I liked the added info at the end. Makes it seem more like you're figuring out what happened. I feel stupid, though. I got it right, but because I was thinking "oh, it's Mandy, because wouldn't the sun rise at 5?" and I'm probably wrong about that, anyway. Loved it!

lol i figured it was Mandy. but not because of the sunset. it was because she woke up just about 6.30 - so... yay meh! hehe

I just love it when I am Correct about the "Who Done It?" crime capers. Yes, it had to be Mandy who watched the beautiful Sun Rise before the actual time of the body's discovery. Mandy, it would have been too Bright, I think for her to actually see the body with the reflection of the sun beaming in her eyes and the body's position under the table, unless, you placed it there.

I got it right. i remembered the one lady saw the sunSET, so the niece couldn't have seen the sunRISE. Yay
