I'm a ten-letter word, but when I am heard,
It is a surprise, but I'm half that size.

My first sound is found when half isn't around.
When a pair is amiss, the other is called this.

The second has one where normally two form a pair.
You will get the nod if you look in a pod.

Together, my fifth and third hold music that is heard.
A pair you are seeking, alphabetically speaking.

And the fourth sound, it will be found
If you look where I send, in the middle of end.

aj1988 Nov 11, 2006	Difficult, but mainly because of misleading hints; i.e., 'Pair' is used instead of 'couple.' Riddle gives the idea that the word sounds shorter than its actual spelling. To figure out the answer to this teaser one must definitely think 'outside the box'...

builder Sep 11, 2008	Wow Marc, Hard but interesting. You do know that two peas in a pod refers to "snug as" not how many peas are in a pod right? I got the "p" part OK but was too literal on the pair part. Double U therefore just U so after that was pretty much out of the game

eamon Sep 11, 2011	Zero fun factor. Sorry. This is one of those which only sort of makes sense after you read the answer. A good riddle should lead with some sort of realistic cues about where we're meant to follow. This one had a brick wall between the riddle and the answer. Where's the enjoyment in that? Sorry.
