## Pen & Paper I

Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.

 Puzzle ID: #35301 Fun: (2.55) Difficulty: (2.68) Category: Trick Submitted By: calmsavior

You will need a working pen and a sheet of paper for this one. Orient the paper into landscape form, and write this on the paper:

620 = 3000

You cannot:
Cross the equation sign to obtain a "not-equal" sign.
Fold the paper in any way.
Draw any curves.
Place any decimal points.
Place any middle dots (for multiplication).
Use "000" as a distinct number.

 peanut Feb 13, 2007 Great teaser... I missed it though Why the landscape orientation? (or was that just to confuse me? - it worked!) karenokupniak Feb 13, 2007 Tricky indeed. Wouldn't the second slash go between the third and fourth zero in the 3000 to make "300/0"? I wouldn't have gotten it in any event, but "30/00" doesn't say anything to me. campfirecutie Feb 13, 2007 I didn't get it but had fun trying. Math was never my strong point. scallio Feb 13, 2007 karenokupniakus- he meant the slash should go between the 2nd and 3rd zeros of the 3000. You're figuring int he zero in the 620. I hate it when I need the hint, but there was no way I was solving this without it! Very good teaser! LeonRes-Evil2 Feb 13, 2007 you could also put a < sign above the =, making 620 less than or equal to 3000. Two lines, and it works! calmsavior Feb 13, 2007 i think that would only work if it was 620 - 3000. Skydragon Feb 13, 2007 Excellent teaser this is one of the best in a while notsosmart111 Feb 13, 2007 I like it but it wasn't that hard! Sand-Storm Feb 13, 2007 very good job. missed it but was fun trying. vlerma Feb 13, 2007 Very nice job. Was out of my data base but it was fun trying. vlerma Feb 13, 2007 Very nice job. Was out of my data base but it was fun trying. vlerma Feb 13, 2007 oops! Sorry lukeschett Feb 14, 2007 The hint didn't help me. Lady_Lani Feb 14, 2007 yay I got it right! calmsavior Feb 15, 2007 Also, LeonRes-Evil2, it says "equation", not "inequality". mommydyanne Feb 15, 2007 Got it! Twas fun but not too hard. Thanks though! sugarnspice4u7 Feb 16, 2007 you slash the 62 with one line and the other number with 1 line 0=000 true luv2sing101 Feb 19, 2007 wow! i thought i had tryed all methods but not that one! good one!!!!!!!!! Snowlovers Feb 23, 2007 62/0=300/0 0=0 also works calmsavior Feb 24, 2007 Anything divided by 0 does not produce a definitive value. It is illegal in mathematics to divide by 0. (user deleted) Feb 24, 2007 Correct me if I am wrng, but could you not just cross out the noumbers there and put 1 on each side? (user deleted) Feb 24, 2007 Correct me if I am wrong, but could you not just cross out the noumbers there and put 1 on each side? (user deleted) Feb 24, 2007 sorry for my double post( now a triple post I guess) but I tried to correct my spelling after I hit add coment, and posted twice. Sorry. calmsavior Feb 24, 2007 thats four lines brudork Feb 25, 2007 How is this trick????????????????????????????????? crossr Feb 25, 2007 One thing I'm surprised none of you have mentioned, you could simply use two lines to write an "X" beside the 620, and that would make it valid. (620X=3000) LeafFan4life Mar 02, 2007 ohhh my solution was to just put the variable X beside 620 so it is 620x=3000 so x can equal anything because it is a variable in this case x=4.84 which would also make my statement true katiejayn Mar 06, 2007 I sort of got the answer - but it said you couldn't use dots "in the middle" to multiply - I used it to get effectively the same answer: 6/20 = .3000 (which is 30%) I didn't think you had to use both strokes, and by the way the question was framed it seemed that it was okay to use the dot in a non-multiplication sense. Seeing the final two zeroes as part of a % sign was difficult, though. calmsavior Mar 06, 2007 It also says no decimal points can be drawn. lav4geniy Mar 06, 2007 Great teaser! Loved it! Though I didn't get it... hersheyugget Mar 07, 2007 it also works if you put< over the equals sighn to make it less than or eaqual too didida Mar 18, 2007 I thought that it was 620x! squishysqueak Mar 29, 2007 i didnt figure it out but very nice! mixed_masteress Apr 24, 2007 The hint totally gave it away. From then it wasn't hard. >=D. GREAT TEASTER! IluvDepp_Bloom May 15, 2007 I'm really bad at math, so that was kind of hard! mosca Aug 21, 2007 Verrrry tricky! But neat! Lord_Hawk Oct 04, 2009 Brilliant hint nachosnachos Oct 23, 2009 Funny Teaser!
