I am close to a polygon, but not in that subject, I start with the same letter though.
I am close to a square, but only in the sense that my sides are the same.
What am I?

Well, the polygon and the square reference did a good job misdirecting us to consider geometrical objects. But using the square with its four equal sides is misleading since only two sides are involved with the palindrome. It doesn't have all its sides equal like the square. Since many things are symmetrical the answer could have been panda or planarian.
