Trees of Silver, Green, and GoldTrivia brain teasers have some element of trivia in them, but they are not just pure trivia questions.
Sarah is going off to college. Her parents decided to get her a gift that she could actually use. They said that they had gotten someone to build for her a very special dwelling for when she went away. Sarah, being very excited about surprises, begged them to tell her what it was. They refused each time, but after two weeks of incessant pleading, they gave her a sheet of paper. It was a riddle. It said:
"Sarah, we've devised these riddles for you. If you figure them out, you will be able to figure out what kind of dwelling we had built for you.
1. I am usually found east of misty mountains
And north of animate trees
I am said to be in a beautiful land
But sadly, it is one you'll never see.
2. One whose name meant Silver Crowned Gift
She forsook me early
Her father left much later
His name meant Silver Tree.
3. If you don't like heights
I'm not the place for you
You would hate me more
If you hate nature too."
Sarah figured out what kind of home her parents built her, and ran upstairs to start planning out her furnishings.
So, what kind of home did her parents build for her?
HintLook at the title.
AnswerThey build her a talan (or flet), like what the elves of Lothlorien live in in "The Lord of the Rings".
The first riddle is describing Lothlorien. The land is east of the Misty Mountains, and north of Fangorn Forest (which is where the Ents live). It is said to be a very beautiful land, but you'll never see it because it doesn't exist.
The second riddle describes some of the elves from Lothlorien, since they would have lived in telain (plural for talan). Celebrian means Silver Crowned Gift, and she left Lothlorien earlier than her parents, because she went to Rivendell when she married Elrond. Her father's name, Celeborn, means Silver Tree, and he left much later than her, to go to Rivendell to live with her sons Elladan and Elrohir, before leaving for Valinor to meet up with her and his wife Galadriel.
The third riddle is describing the kind of environment in which you'd find a talan. If you hated heights, you wouldn't like it because it is up in a tree. Being in a tree, it is surrounded by nature.
The title is describing the kind of tree that telain are built in: Mellyrn (plural of Mallorn), a fictional tree based off the real Beech Tree. Its bark is grey (hence silver), it has green leaves when the weather is warm, and the leaves turn golden in the winter. When they fall in the spring, they give way to yellow flowers.
