Jul 30, 2007
| Hmmm, it must be an American pronunciation thing. In Australia we would never say that "colony" starts with "call" - "colony" is pronounced "COLL-on-nee" but "call" is pronounced "CAWL" - totally different sounds! |
leftclick
Jul 30, 2007
| Does that mean you guys make "caller" and "collar" into homophones? |
bradon182001

| I got it, but wasn't positive I had right answer until I read the hint. I have to agree with Leftclick tho. Maybe 13 cow knees would work.Good rebus. |

Jul 30, 2007
| I got this teaser!!! I liked it too. It was clever. And as far as the pronunciation of call, it seems it really depends on where you are from. For the most part in the U.S., we pronounce call as "cawl" |
leftclick
Jul 30, 2007
| I don't think it's the pronunciation of "call" that changes, but that of "coll" (in collar or colony). To me, the "o" in these words is pronounced short, nothing like the long "a" in call. |

| I flunked history in school.
I counted 13 Call Knees. Didn't
clue in to Colonies. I looked at hint & gave up cause it was US
history. (I'm Canadian)Gave up too easily
Very Good Though when I read the
answer. I liked it.

Hey, "Grandma B" - I'm a grandma B., too. And I was muttering 13 call knee over a couple of times until I figured it out, too. I completely missed the call "ON" knee hint, though. |

| Great teaser! Brilliant rebus! It took some thinking though. I was looking and saying, "Call over knee?" "Knee under call?" "Call on knee?" Hot dawg! Colony. Yup, there's 13 of them! |

Jul 31, 2007
| FAR FROM BRILLIANT, JUST PLAIN EASY! |
shawneeo
Jul 31, 2007
| no way.
But, really, it was good! But I just have to agree with the others above. I never would've gotten it without the hint, because "call" pronounced "kawl" or almost like "coal", isn't the same as "caw" that rhymes with "paw". I would've expected it to be caw/knee if it was "colonies", so without the hint I never would've guessed that.
It's a great idea though. In my obviously humble, , opinion, (is he kidding? humble? ) (shaddup), I think if you changed the "call" to "caw", the teaseer would still be just as hard, but would also be PERFECT! It IS a BRILLIANT idea, it really is! Thanks for the teaser, Leaf!

| Really, I think shows how hard it is to write these kinds of teasers because accents are different everywhere! ...and it's hard to explain pronunciation using text |

| In most US dialects "call-on-knee" and "colony" are very close in pronunciation. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cot-caught_merger
Historical nit: The term "thirteen colonies" is a retronym. At the first Continental Congress there was no attempt to count them, because some colonies contained others. By the time of the second Continental Congress (Declaration of Independence) it was the "the thirteen united States of America". |

| I think that ":e :e :e :e..." etcetera would have been a much better way of representing this. Even so, this is an example of one of those many US style teasers on Braingle where if you are not an American you have little chance of recogniSing the "common phrase". |
