The Twelfth Day of Christmas
According to the song, "Twelve Days of Christmas", how many gifts did my true love give to me on Christmas day?
Answer
The twelve days of Christmas start on Christmas day (25th December) and finish on the morning of Epiphany (January 6). As a result, my true love only gave me a partridge in a pear tree on Christmas day.In addition (and please feel free to tell my neighbour), it can be considered unlucky if you do not take your Christmas decorations down by the 12th night!

Nice one...so many people think that Christmas begins on Dec. 1st and ends on th 25. It disgusts me how many Christmas trees are sitting out on the street day the after Christmas.
dont fell bad an old niebore of mine used to leave this decorations up all year round
I agree with your "calendar" and share your sentiments - December is mostly Advent, and "Merry Christmas" can be extended up through Epiphany!
But a question back at you: if 25 Dec is the "first day", how can 6 Jan be the "12th day"? By my count, it would be the 13th!
I'm not being rhetorical here - I don't have the answer, and have wondered about that.
Thanks.

I have always wondered why the song says there are twelve days of christmas. Now i understand that some people believe in this ephiny thing.
I've never heard that it was unlucky to keep your decorations up after the sixth. I always heard it was unlucky to take them down before the first.

My family leaves the Christmas lights on all year ... like most families in our neighborhood.
We dont leave the stuff on til' the 6th
Epiphany is actually the Twelfth NIGHT, celebrated in Shakespeare's comedy of that name, and marks the arrival of the Three Wise Men with their gifts, which explains the tradition of giving gifts on Twelfth Night, and indeed, for all Twelve days of Christmas. In the Jewish tradition, the day begins at Sunset (the Saturday Jewish Sabbath begins at Sunset Friday night) so Epiphany starts at Sundown January 5th (12 nights after Christmas) and runs until sunset January 6th. However you count them, I hope your holidays were peaceful and pleasant.
Oh, BTW - Sweet teaser!!

I'm Jewish, so I didn't get this... And by the way, don't think of Hanukkah as Jewish Christmas. It's just been Americanized. The real present giving Jewish celebration is Purim.
Great teaser, almost didn't get this one. Blasted tricks.
I don't think this should be in the trick category...it requires prior knowledge, other than knowing the song. The song never mentions which of the 12 days is regarded as our Christmas...it wasn't obvious, per the guidelines of the trick category.
Lita, stop skimming already.
heheheh...
tpg76, according to the book Catherine, Called Birdy, December 26th is the first day of Christmas.
By the way, by that reasoning, your true love gave you nothing on Christmas Day, but I guess she made up for it.
