Teenage Party
Science brain teasers require understanding of the physical or biological world and the laws that govern it.
While his parents were away, a teenage boy and his friends drank some of the parents' gin. This, of course, was strictly forbidden. They then poured water into the gin bottle to return the level to where it had originally been and put the bottle back exactly where they had found it. However, when the couple came home, the father took one look at the bottle of gin and turned angrily to his son to denounce him for illicit drinking. How had he known?
Answer
The father kept his bottle of gin in the freezer, where gin remains liquid even to very low temperatures. The watered-down gin, however, had frozen into a solid block within the bottle.

| Wow - first to comment twice in a row! Another QTzer - is this drawn from personal experience??
If you knew the original alcohol content of the gin, you could calculate exactly how much the boy and his friend consumed to raise the freezing point sufficiently to get caught - if you were inclined to pursue such exercises.

| UnkleMyke, I like your thinking. You could also weigh the contents and get the offset from its original "proof" by the difference in gravity. Of course you have to know density vs. composition, as the mixing volume is non-linear... but this is well known for ethanol-water.
TOO MUCH to think about on this one! Pass the bottle. |

| Nice one! Didn't get it, but as you can see from my icon, I don't drink. |

| The only thing I could think of was that the watering down changed the color, but I knew that was wrong... |

| Ha, cute. It would have been nice if the fact that it had been stored in the freezer previously was mentioned. Instead of "back where they found it" "back in the freezer" would be nice. But that's just me. All and all, great teaser. |

| Good quiz, although it was difficult to answer without being given the information that it was stored in a freezer. |
