Brain Teasers
More Odds Oddities
I roll my die 100 times, and you see the results are as follows:
[1] 18 times
[2] 16 times
[3] 17 times
[4] 15 times
[5] 34 times
[6] 0 times
What are the odds of the 101st throw being a six?
[1] 18 times
[2] 16 times
[3] 17 times
[4] 15 times
[5] 34 times
[6] 0 times
What are the odds of the 101st throw being a six?
Hint
This is under trick, remember.Answer
Zero.If you roll a die 100 times and get the result above, chances are that it has no 6, but it has two fives.

Hm, I wouldn't quite call this a trick...
Perhaps it would fit better under probability?
Maybe if you specified that it was a six-sided die?

Aw come on! This is trick, it should be 1 in 6. Gosh.
"Chances are" it has two fives. No one knows that for sure.
Well I liked it.
LOL... go easy, tinaG! I would say, "chance are" that you just didn't get this one right. (Right?)
I have to agree with tinaG, except that "lame" is too tame for this one. Editor obviously doesn't understand probabilities. It is completely possible to roll a normal six-sided die 100 or even 1000 times without rolling a six. The odds only tell you HOW FREQUENTLY an event will occur. They do not say that they will NEVER occur. I'm surprised this one got past the editors! Somebody was snoozing.
Maybe instead of complaining, maybe you should report a problem and stop being lazy!
being a math teacher, this problem is not stated correctly
we sometimes use 8 sided dice for probability, and the wording of the question is confusing, not tricky
not the best of teasers

Maths teachers aren't really known for their lateral thinking though are they? lol that reminds me of a joke about a mathematician a physicist and a philosopher...
Anyway I thought it was a good teaser

I agree with TinaG and most everyone else. There are no real die with two 5s and no 6s. There could possibly be a 5 sided die, but including the number 6 in the data chart means that there must be a six on the die
Tricky tricky
I think it is fine in the trick category.

I have to agree with the nay-sayers here, but I don't think I'd put it quite so roughly. I doubt that anybody would 'get' this one; it's really far-fetched.
You are an editor? I might never come back to this sight after that one! Lame does not begin to describe this. I'm ashamed of you.
well, i don't really understand WHY everyone is arguing...it's just a teaser people!!!
gee whiz, go get yall some lives or something. leave the comments for those of us who have something decent to say!
although i've never seen a die with another 5 in place of the 6, that doesn't mean it can't be so. and the creator may have put 6 in the chart because everyone expects it to be there. this is a trick teaser ya know!
i though it was a great teaser! keep up the great work!!!

there are cheaters and tricksters everywhere, and I'm sure if one was good enough, one could pass of a 123455 die as a 123456. I dunno how, but hey, why not?
it does not matter if six was rolled zero times, there arent dice with 2 fives first of all and second of all the 101st time would be 1 in 6 just like the other 100, this was the stupidest one i ever saw, sorry but it was not fun.
chill boys
and girls
though there is a chance that no 6 came in 100 rolls, to me there is a bigger chance that 6 isn't on the die.
Nice teaser!

I didn't really get it Ooo.. Come to the dark-side I have cookies. ( If you are wondering why, it is because I'm trying to get alot of people to be on the dark side. It's fun over here)
i'll join the dark side, lil2007!!
I love cookies!!!

Well, despite all you nay sayers, I really liked this teaser because you all should have been able to figure out that it has two 5's based on the outcome of the 100 throws. 5 came out twice as often as it should have. It's a trick! True, no die known to man has two 5's...unless it's a TRICK die! :-D good teaser, and right where is belongs.
how can a dice have 2 fives and no sixes??? I'm confused
I don't particularly believe this answer. It's a possibility, yes, but it could also just be a freak occurence that there has been no sixes rolled. The teaser asks us to assume too much.
But nevertheless, it was fun.

I think this was a little TOO tricky.. I mean, a die w/ 2 5s? Might as well say "Zero - he didn't want to throw it the 101st time" or something. But, then again, I'm bad with math & probability.
I would never have gotten this right, 2 5s or no. I stink with statistics and stuff.
The answer should have been 1/6!!!!
I agree with hollymo. Even though if it were probibility, it would have been 1/6
Y'all are wrong. The ODDS are 1/5. Odds are ways possible/ ways not possible. Learn some math.
Huh. I thought the answer was, "None. You only throw the dice ONE HUNDRED times"...
Rather than saying that the die has two faces with five, it is MORE likely that you're using a five-sided die, if that's the answer you want to use. I have never heard of dice which eliminate the 6 to replace it with a 5.
It wasn't the best, but it's not terrible either. I realize trick teasers are hard to write, which is why I've never done it.

I thought it was just a five-sided die. XD
LeastOriginal 1/5 and 1:5 are two different "odds"
The mathematical answer is 1/6
The trick answer can be anything the writer wants.

I knew there was no 6.
thing is, its chances are there is no six, but it could be because he just dint roll a six right?
Well, you can't call it Boring if it generates a discussion like this.
chances are i hate this teaser
no offense
That's stupid because it could still have a six. Just because the results led to the "chances" of it being two fives doesn't mean that it could not possible have a six. The answer is incorrect.
it says he rolled 100 times but then it says what are the chanches of a 6 on the 101th go so you couldnt roll any number because 101 is higher than 100 therefore it doesnt work i rest my case
