Who was this ruler of bygone ages?
Who was this monarch of old?
Why is he absent from history's pages?
Why of him is so little told?

His little daughter had music skill.
He was a man of jolly mirth;
His amphitheater topped a hill,
But we'd know little of his worth,

Except...!

Someone wrote a bit of rhyme
That gave him immortality.
His name is said now throughout time,
In lines known well to you and me.

What is this king's name?

Brava! Nicely rhymed. I had no idea "Old King Cole" had its roots in a real life. I should have remembered how many "nursery rhymes"are satires on forgotten political controversies. Good Teaser!

Every fiddler he had a fiddle,
And a very fine fiddle had he;
Oh there's none so rare, as can compare
With King Cole and his fiddlers three

The additional lines. Which Cole/Coel that is the question. I conclude that he proves that jazz began in britain.. a merry old soul man was he!!

Nice teaser! I got it after looking at the hint. The rhythm of the riddle was quite nice, unlike most riddles. Good job!
