Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.Language
Which one of the following words does not belong with the other six?
Issue
Mishap
Parachute
Ocean
Semiconscious
Anxious
Mansion
Issue
Mishap
Parachute
Ocean
Semiconscious
Anxious
Mansion
Hint
The title provides three more words that do belong!Answer
Mishap is the misfit. The other six words, and the three in the title, all contain the 'sh' sound - which is spelled in nine different ways!
Ironically, the word which does contain -sh- is not pronounced 'sh'!
'Schedule' would count as another spelling of the same sound, depending on which side of the Atlantic you studied!

I LOOOOOVVVVEEE it!
I thought the pattern was that the second to last letter is a vowel...-_-"
Great teaser!
Who knew there are 9 spelling variations of the "sh" sound?

I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The answer was pretty easy to figure out, but the teaser is very cleverly written. It would have been tough to come up with all the different ways to spell the "sh" sound.
I'm impressed! Great teaser and fun!
Love it, great teaser. Very clever.
I thought it was semiconscious, because it was the only one with more than one s-sounding thing. Great teaser!
Love it!!!
Very good
The answer is so simple and yet hard to figure out!

Happy New Year, everyone! Glad you're enjoying this little teaser. Language is really fun, isn't it - unless you're learning English, I suppose!
A+ Lots of fun.
I liked this puzzle. I spoke each word out loud and got the right answer. Interesting that there are so many different ways to spell words with the same sound. Thanks for posting.
I enjoyed this! Didn't get it, as I was being obtuse enough to look for the answer from past puzzle styles... But now have another way to view things!
I too got it as I was reading the words aloud as I went. Not sure I would have without that.
English is very strange with the various ways certain letter combinations work together to make certain sounds. Using legitimate English letter groupings you could spell FISH as ghoti
gh as in touGH
o as in wOmen
ti as in naTIon
Other languages also have these irresistible but not so many I don't think.

Poorly constructed puzzle, in that there is another solution than the one given, that is arguably correct, to wit, the word "parachute," which is the only word in the list with an odd number of syllables.
well done
I did not get this one right, and don't know if I ever would have regardless of how much I pondered it, but I loved seeing the answer. The irony that "mishap" is the only one with no "sh" sound made me smile.
Really well done.
Really well done.
Thanks Snowdog. Yes, it took a while to write but I was pleased with the result.
Hmmm, lukasiwicz, your comment above is typical of many critics in this category. I consider that groups with trivial differences such as the one you observed are not worthy of the title "Puzzle"! Without too much thought, we could probably think of a distinguishing feature for each option in almost every 'odd one out' set. e.g. semiconscious is the only word to start and finish with the same letter, issue is the only one with a double consonant. Good grief!
Perhaps you are the odd one out, given the overall enjoyment level earned by this one!
Here's a challenge - could someone write an 'odd one out' in which the one that doesn't fit is the only one that isn't a valid solution to the puzzle!

Fun, easy and entertaining teaser; I got this one very quickly.
