Spazy Croonerisms 19
Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.
A spoonerism is a pair of words that can have their initial sounds switched to form new words. The pairs need only sound the same, not necessarily be spelled the same (power saw & sour paw, horse cart & coarse heart). There may sometimes be one or two connecting words (kick the stone & stick the cone, king of the rats & ring of the cats). Given the following definitions, what are the spoonerisms?
1) a lock's companion and a bright-colored tropical bird & a vegetable and a vegetable
2) a chilly tome & a courageous chef
3) a mournful song & a spoiled cold dish of vegetables served with dressing
4) an excavation of an underground ore deposit in Geneva & the winner of a beauty pageant sponsored by pig farmers
Answer
1) key and parrot & pea and carrot
2) cold book & bold cook
3) sad ballad & bad salad
4) Swiss mine & Miss Swine

| Most enjoyable, thanks! - especially the last one.
It reminded me of our trip to Thailand 6 years ago. We found a local a newspaper report of a special government-sponsored project to combat an excess of rodents in the Northeast provinces. Apparently, people no longer ate rats and that was seen as a serious cause of the excess. The project included a recipe competition for rat dishes. And - you guessed it - a Miss Rat Beauty Pageant! |

| Got all but the last one, but I hadn't had my morning coffee yet (it's very strong and has unparalleled ability to stimulate thought). |

| I'm not normally the first to comment, but it is pretty early here right now,(4AM), guess everyone else is still in bed.
I really enjoy these puzzles, easy enough to get with some thought but not so easy the answers are too obvious
A couple I had to work both sides at the same time to get individual words, then the answer fell into place. |

| I LOVE spoonerisms. I gave up before I figured out the 4th one. I am angry with myself for not sticking with it until I finished it. Thanks for a good one! Hello CB - I'm doing fine and hope you are too! HUG! |
