My name is Carlie Hansen, and I am renowned throughout all of England for my detective skills. I have solved many murders, and I have just dealt with my most interesting and challenging case yet.

I was called down to the Mason estate to investigate the murder of Baron Emile Mason, a 54-year-old exceedingly rich man who had been discovered, shot in the back of the head, a month before I was asked to investigate.

All the members of the family were adamant that a man named Henri Lyman was the culprit. "He hated Emile; Henri was poor, whilst Emile just kept getting richer. He would've happily done away with Emile," were the words of Rose Mason, Emile's niece.

I visited the building where Emile had been found. It was such a picturesque building, with its cream walls, butter-yellow front door, honeysuckle and neatly pointed roof, it was very strange to think of it as a scene of a brutal murder.

Being a tall woman, I banged my head on the low, flat ceiling as soon as I walked in the door. The blue carpet was stained with blood. It sent a shiver down my spine.

I came home that night, feeling confused and suspicious. I had asked the relatives how Emile had amassed his fortune, but they all clammed up. I had decided not to push them further and left early.

Later that week, I asked my sister Lilie, who lives in the same town as the Masons, how Emile had become so rich. Her voice immediately died down to a whisper. "Officially, he's supposed to have been the owner of an insurance company. Unofficially, everyone knows he was actually a cocaine smuggler and a miser. I think Henri was after his stash. Anyway... I gotta go, Carlie. Bye."

Interesting! I searched every inch of the estate, but I couldn't find any traces of cocaine, and the relatives were constantly pleading that Emile was just a rich business owner. It was frustrating work, and I was wondering whether it was just a tall tale, until I heard on the news that Henri Lyman was in court, charged with possessing Class A drugs.

After another few months of digging (this was a very long case!) I became firmly convinced that Henri had killed Emile after Emile refused to reveal the whereabouts of his cocaine stash. I had witness statements, CCTV- enough to take to court, except for one thing. Proof of the cocaine stash. Without that, my case would fall apart.

Then it hit me, in a flash. I had searched every inch of the buildings. But there was one detail that seemed very fishy. There was one thing that didn't add up. And I was convinced that I had discovered the whereabouts of Emile Mason's cocaine stash.

Where was Emile's drug stash hidden?

awesome teaser! should belong in mystery though
Mar 07, 2010

Why is this in "trick"?
Mar 07, 2010

I can't believe I got that!
I do agree with the above that this should be in mystery, but it's still going in my favorites.
Mar 08, 2010

I see no trick in this teaser... :S

So how was henri in court for possessing drugs? I thought he shot emile because he didn't reveal where the drugs were hidden.
Mar 15, 2010

I thought every inch of the estate was searched...turns out NOT every inch of the estate was searched. How can I get the answer when the facts are wrong? Also, I'd think that the attic would be a fairly obvious place to look anyway.

Thanks, Mr Cynic. Glad you liked the teaser.

This was a tight little mystery, easy, simple but a clever little story with lots of imagination. This story is a building block.

Good Mystery...

ALL houses in England have a pointed roof and flat ceilings so this didn't work for me.
Apr 17, 2010

Marple, guess where the person who wrote the teaser is from?
Jun 13, 2010

That makes it even more confusing!!
Sep 20, 2010

I too thought it funny that the police wouldn't have noticed the low ceiling with pointed roof and wouldn't have checked the attic, but I did enjoy this story. It was a fun read.

Thanks for posting. I'm anxiously awaiting Carlie's next mystery!
Oct 07, 2010

i got it

Good interesting storylike teaser
but one thing REALLY annoyed me.
The way Carlie and Lillie's names were spelled! URGH!
Let's just say, I'm not too keen on alternative spellings for names...

I love this teaser!
Mar 21, 2011

It meant every inch of what you can see was searched. Great mystery. I noticed she hit her head but didn't notice till I read the hint and reread it slowly that the roof was pointed.
Jul 13, 2011

Nov 21, 2011

Jun 12, 2012

I got it right away, but not without asking myself WHY their names are spelled that way.
Aug 18, 2012

I got it right! I knew that it was a hidden attic! YAY!
Dec 30, 2012

I got it right, but it says the ceiling was flat and the roof was pointed, but when have you ever seen a pointed ceiling? Still very interesting though.
Sep 21, 2013

I have a pointed ceiling.
