Brain Teasers
Hundred Dollar Exercise
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Clever Chris had a contest in his school. His gym teacher said who ever could make the treadmill go the fastest without falling would win a hundred dollars. Now, Chris wasn't very athletic, but he found a way to win the money anyways. What did he do?
Answer
It's simple; he stood by the treadmill, put it up to the highest speed, and since he wasn't on the treadmill, he didn't fall, thus winning him the hundred dollars.Hide Answer Show Answer

If it was an electric treadmill, the teacher would have never phrased the bet in that manner. He would have said, "Whoever can stay on the treadmill on the highest setting..." The wording of the bet implies that the treadmill is self-powered.
I agree with Valannin, I was picturing a mechanical treadmill. So I imagined Chris built some sort of motorized rotating contraption to put traction against the treadmill belt automatically. Or he launched the treadmill with a giant catapult. That would surely make the treadmill "go the fastest."
Umm...it's kinda stupid...it's obvious when you say "who can make the treadmill go the fastest" instead of "who can run fastest on the treadmill"
He just put the treadmill on the fastest setting. The teacher said, "whoever can get the treadmill the fastest without falling wins." She never said that anyone HAD to go ON the treadmill.
Nice easy puzzle!
