These brain teasers rely on your ability to recognize groups of common attributes. For each of these puzzles you'll need to figure out why the words or letters are grouped as they are. Sometimes you will be asked to pick the odd-one-out or to place a new word into the correct group.
Which word does not belong?
selflessness, selfishness, strengthlessness, defenselessness
Selfishness, all the other words use only one vowel

and it is also the only one not ending with "lessness"
Jul 04, 2002
all the others use just E and that uses I and E. Also, you could say strengthlessness because it has no F in it.
Jul 09, 2002
but strengthlessness is the only word without "F" - do it doesn't belong if you use that rule
Aug 09, 2002
Defenselessnes is the only word not beginning with "s"
(and it's also misspelled, although I assume that's a typo).
Nov 27, 2002
defenselaesnes was spelled with only 1 s at the end in stesad of 2, so that does not belong also it does'nt start with an s.

sorry 'bout the misspells. typo

I though "defenselessnes", since it is the only one that starts with a D. For a letter-type teaser the choice of words wasn't the best, but i had fun with it never the less. Keep them coming.

I was thinking the same as smarty was. But all in all, still a good teaser.

The answer "uses only one vowel" is very misleading. That portrays that each word only contains 1 vowel, not that it uses specifically ONE vowel. Consider a rewrite please

You could say the answer is:
Defenselessness: because it doesn't start with an s.
Selfishness: because it doesn't end with "lessness."
Selflessness: because it is a positive, rather than negative, trait.
Teasers like this require a supplementary group of words that don't fit the criteria, used to test methods of discrimination.
