Safari Game
Logic puzzles require you to think. You will have to be logical in your reasoning.
A group of friends is on safari (a photo-safari, no animals were killed during the creation of this teaser!). During the game, they are awarded points for each animal they get. For example,
LION=4 points minimum
HYENA=11 points minimum
GIRAFFE=14 points minimum, but would be worth over 64 points in a certain situation.
Based on this information, what is the minimum number of points for a ZEBRA?
Bonus question: when would a GIRAFFE be worth more than 64 points?
HintWhat game gives points for words?

Answer
ZEBRA=16 points minimum
The game they were playing is Scrabble, so the minimum number of points therefore Z=10, E=1, B=3, R=1 and A=1, for a total of 16 points.
Note that this minimum is based on not forming other words with letters, and not placing letters on a double/triple letter or double/triple word score.
Bonus: GIRAFFE is a seven letter word. If you use all 7 of your letters when forming a word, you get a 50 point bonus!

Hmm, I didn't think of that. I instead put the numbers to powers. 4^1.74 about equal to 11, and 11^1.74 is about equal to 64.

Nice one! I got it quite quickly, but I play scrabble often. Good work hiding "game" in there. I didn't think of the 50 point bonus and was trying to get a double letter, triple word. :-)

You can't use 7 of your letters to make GIRAFFE, because one letter has to be on the board. UNLESSSSS you'd be able to get the 64 points for giraffe would be the first move of the game, except that one tile would have to be placed on the star, and isn't that a double-tile square?

Blinkgoddess, you can add GIRAFFE to the board using all 7 letters if there is room. For instance, you can put GIRAFFE with the E under (or to the right) of the H in HYENA. You get more than 64 points because you would get points for making HE.

Also, if there is an "S" somewhere, it could be Giraffes. Therefore the person playing would be in fact spelling "Giraffe," but also be making another word. Of course, this would net more points than just "Giraffe," but that's ok, right?? ;-)

I like the teaser, but I fail to see how this belongs in the logic category.

Gizzer, you can't put the word giraffe under the H in Hyena. You have to connect it THROUGH a word. The only way to put it under is to also put it through another word.

Bear, I can indeed put GIRAFFE on the board so that the E lines up with the H in HYENA to make the word HE. If there's room. At turn #3 there would be plenty of room. And it certainly isn't against the rules of the game.

This teaser is not a good one. If you are not familiar with the rules of scrabble the bored game (:, you would have no chance.

Umm, you didn't explain how the giraffe would be more than 64 points. I take it you mean when you use all seven tiles and have it on a doulbe or triple letter or word?

I liked and laughed at the fact it said "no animals were harmed in the making of this teaser". Giraffe would be worth 128 or 192 (double/treble word scores). Or more (double/treble letter scores). Great teaser though giz !
