Messed-Up Survey
A survey agency recently reported their results of a recent survey in the local newspaper. The report clearly states that exactly 100 lawyers were interviewed. Of the one hundred, 75 own BMWs, 95 own Volvos, and 50 lawyers own both a BMW and a Volvo.
Within a short time, several lawyers argue that the results are incorrect. How can they tell?

Answer
The numbers do not add up correctly. The report stated that only 100 people were interviewed, but they received 120 responses. You can see this by making a Venn Diagram of the data. (BMW only-25, BMW and Volvo-50, Volvo only-45)25
50
+45
----
120

lol it is really kinda easy. it says 50 own both a bmw and a volvo. 95 people own volvos, subtract the 50 from that number giving you 45 unaccounted for volvos, same thing for bmw (25). you then take the 50 plus the unaccounted for (25 and 45) which adds up to 120. hope that helps
What does lol mean?
laugh out loud!!! lol!!!
Please comment on my teaser! I need feedback so I can improve future teasers! Thank you!
The way I figured it: If 95 of the 100 lawyers owned Volvos than only 5 of the total didn't own a Volvo. That means of the 75 BMW owners at the very least 70 of them would also own a Volvo. Using this logic, its the 50 figure that is in error. Using your Venn diagram illustration this works out:
70 both cars
25 Volvo only
5 BMW only
= 100
70 both cars
25 Volvo only
5 BMW only
= 100
100% not original.
